Chapter 599
Atlas's face twisted into a bitter, angry expression. "Brother," he implored, "I am your real brother, the one you watched grow up. Can you truly suspect me based solely on a fake document?"
Chapman and Grandma Ye exchanged a glance, their aged faces etched with disbelief. "Leo," Chapman began, his voice wavering, "I, too, believe in Atlas. He would never stoop so low."
Leo found himself caught in a whirlpool of confusion and hesitation. The thought of Vera being involved was bearable, but the idea of Luna, whom he had raised since she were a child, and Atlas, his own brother, being part of this deceit was a pill too bitter to swallow.
"I understand your skepticism," Cassie interjected, his voice calm and steady. "You may find it hard to believe based solely on the paternity test. Fortunately, I have a contingency plan." With a casual clap of his hands, the scene in front of them changed dramatically.
The large screen that dominated the room flickered to life, revealing a scene so clear and explicit it was impossible to ignore. Atlas lay sprawled on a bed, Vera perched atop him, their actions leaving little to the imagination.
"Baby," Atlas's voice echoed in the room, "can you see how I compare to my useless brother now?"
Vera's response was equally damning. "Yes, I regret it. I should have chosen you from the start, Atlas. You are truly remarkable."
The explicit scene sent Vera spiraling towards the edge of hysteria. She rushed forward, her voice a desperate plea. "Stop it, stop it!"
But the scene on the screen shifted again, revealing a disheveled Vera leaning against Atlas.
"Atlas," she murmured, her voice laced with anticipation, "when will Leo finally relinquish the shares to our Luna?"
Atlas's response was as damning as it was shocking. "Don't worry. On our thirtieth anniversary, I'll find a way to convince my older brother."
Their plan was laid bare for all to see. "Once we have the shares, Luna will control the entire Leo Group."
Beneath the stage, Atlas's fury morphed into a pale, embarrassed grimace. His plan to sever ties with Leo after Luna secured the shares had been exposed in the most humiliating way possible.
The room buzzed with whispers and pointed fingers, all directed at Atlas, Vera, and Luna.
"Disgusting," one voice muttered. "An affair between the sister-in-law and the brother-in-law. I thought such things only happened on television."
Another voice chimed in, "What affair? They've probably been entangled for over twenty years. Vera even birthed an illegitimate child, pretending she was Leo's, all to seize control of his shares."
The whispers grew louder, each one a knife to Leo's heart. "Atlas is too cunning. Leo has always treated him well."
"And Vera, always so noble and elegant. Who would have thought she could stoop so low?"
"I used to accompany my wife on shopping trips with Vera. Now the mere thought disgusts me."
"Thank goodness the truth came out tonight. Otherwise, all of Leo's shares would have ended up in Atlas's hands."
The murmurs reached Leo's ears, each word fueling his rage. But as the truth sank in, his anger gave way to a profound sadness.
The realization hit him like a punch to the gut. Vera's claim of being pregnant with his child had been a lie. He had abandoned Cassie's mother and Cassie himself for this child, forsaking his own family for a lie.
Over the years, Leo had cherished a child that wasn't his, while Cassie had suffered in silence. The question echoed in his mind, a haunting refrain - what had he done?
