Chapter 437

On her way there, Matilda had braced herself for Joseph's potential hostility. However, she hadn't expected to witness such a scene of serene domesticity.
As the couple stepped into the room and caught sight of Matilda, Joseph's gentle smile faltered, morphing into a mask of cool detachment and wariness. Matilda felt a pang of hurt prickling at her heart.

"Hey Grandma," Cassie greeted warmly, her tone as calm as if there had never been any unpleasantness between them.

Matilda glanced at her coldly and didn't respond.

Joseph's face darkened. "If you're here to give my wife a hard time, you can leave now."

"You..." Matilda almost choked on her anger. "I am your grandmother. Must I be on my deathbed for you to find happiness?"

"I knew the Hernandez family was adding salt to my wounds this time. If it weren't for Cassie, you folks would have probably shipped me off to a psych ward again without a second thought," Joseph said with a wry smile. "If there's even a shred of family affection left in you, show her some respect."

Matilda's mood soured further.

Seeing this, Cassie spoke up softly, "Grandma, because of everything that's happened, I've been disfigured. If anyone has the right to be angry, it should be me. Or is it because I don't rank as high as the Hernandezes, so I deserve all the suffering I get?"

Before Matilda could respond, Joseph interjected, "I was the one pursuing her all along; don't paint her as some manipulator. She didn't even recognize me when we first met. I was the one who dated Luna just to provoke a reaction from her."

"How could you treat Luna that way?" Matilda's voice trembled with anger.

"If you like her so much, why don't you go ahead and adopt her as your own granddaughter?" Joseph replied coldly.

"I'm only thinking of your well-being. Luna is a good girl..."

"And Cassie isn't?" Joseph interjected sharply. "They're both Leo Chapman's daughters. What did Cassie do wrong? She didn't choose to be born into the situation. She never knew her father's love and when she finally got to know him, everyone looked down on her. Even though she's older than Luna, it was her mother who was cast aside. Cassie is the real victim here."

Matilda was left speechless by the rebuke.

Sensing the tension, Cassie said, "It's almost lunchtime. You two continue talking; I'll go and prepare the meal. Grandma, please stay and have lunch with us."

"If you're staying just to criticize my wife, then there's no need for it," Joseph retorted frostily.

Matilda, feeling the sting to her pride, retorted, "You think I..."

"Joseph, Grandma's getting older. It's not easy for her to make this trip. Shut up for a minute, will you?" Cassie snapped at Joseph, subtly restoring some dignity for her grandmother.

Joseph huffed, and Matilda fell silent.

After Cassie entered the kitchen, Matilda took out some documents from her lawyer, "Your grandfather left these for you. Sign them, and you'll have control over the Hernandez Corporation. Your grandfather and I won't interfere with the business anymore."

Joseph signed without hesitation, "Auntie's been running Hernandez Insurance into the ground for years. It's best she retires and enjoys her dividends."

Matilda was taken aback and seethed, "Are you retaliating against her because of what she did to Cassie's face?"

"What if I am? Just because she's your daughter, should I tolerate her harming others? She's no daughter of mine."
