Chapter 143

""Yeah, that's right!"" Laura Miller chimed in swiftly, looking to give Cassie an out, ""Joseph's been a huge help today. She definitely wants to take him out privately to show her thanks.""

""Absolutely, I've already made reservations."" Cassie grabbed her things and pulled Joseph towards the door, eager to escape.

If they lingered, she feared what might happen next—falling into another disaster, possibly at the hands of Joseph Hernandez himself.

Both David and Arthur Lewis frowned as she led Joseph away. David in particular—having had a few unpleasant encounters with the man, knew Joseph's arrogant, nonchalant demeanor all too well. And yet, Cassie was dragging him by the arm?
His mind suddenly flashed back to the steakhouse incident when both of them had disappeared simultaneously, and he began to suspect that there was more to their relationship than met the eye.

Arthur couldn't contain his discomfort, so he intercepted Laura Miller before she could leave. ""Laura, it seems like Cassie and Joseph Hernandez are getting along okay. Do you think Joseph has a thing for Cassie?""

""Right, you mentioned you had a friend who knows Joseph Hernandez. Who exactly are we talking about?""

""I've heard it's tough to get Joseph Hernandez to take on a legal case, and even if you do, his fees are astronomical. Does Cassie have that kind of money?""

After a barrage of questions, Laura snapped at him irritably, ""None of your damn business, you creep. Get lost.""

""You..."" Arthur's face reddened in anger up to his neck.

""Just to be clear, if it weren't for the fact that you helped out when Cassie got hauled into the precinct, I would have already smacked that smug look off your face with my purse.""

Laura huffed and stormed away.

Down in the parking lot.

Walter was driving in silence, the two in the backseat said nothing.

Joseph Hernandez, his gaze locked on his phone, exuded a chill that made the car feel as if the air conditioning was on full blast.

Cassie stole glances at him, sensing his displeasure. She was certain it wasn't jealousy but likely him suspecting her of being unfaithful again.

Whenever he saw her getting a ride from another man, he'd assume the worst. She understood that men can be selfishly possessive, thinking that if you belonged to them, nobody else could even touch you, whether they genuinely liked you or not.

Sighing, she timidly tugged at his sleeve, ""I had no idea they would show up out of the blue. There's nothing between us.""

""Nothing?"" he shot her a scornful look, his laughter tinged with cold sarcasm.

""So 'nothing' means they call you 'Cassie', all cozy and familiar? One's an ex, the other's pursuing you, and they're both here today, tripping over themselves to thank me. Your charm is quite something, Cassie.""

She had no response; his every word sent chills down her spine.

""Speak,"" he demanded, his irritation growing when she remained silent.

Trembling, Cassie stammered, ""I... well... haven't I admitted to being charming before?""

Sure enough, Joseph let out an eerie laugh as he swiftly pulled off his tie.
Unbidden, Cassie’s mind hoarded scraps of unnerving scenarios from novels she’d read, instinctively recoiling into a corner, ""What are you going to do, tie me up? I’ll jump out of the car.”

Joseph Hernandez’s brow quirked at that, glancing down at the tie in his hands, a twitch playing at the corner of his mouth."
