Chapter 999 Can't You Behave?
"It was me who slept with her. I was out cold," Joseph said, looking regretful.
"Joseph," Cassie snapped, glaring at him. "You're not a good..."
The words "good father" almost slipped out, but she caught herself.
"Yeah, I know I'm not a good uncle," Joseph said sincerely, not overthinking it. "I'm trying to be a good new dad to Sophia."
"New dad?" Cassie's heart skipped a beat.
"Yeah, with Liam gone, I'm her dad now. I take her to and from preschool, sleep with her at night, read books, and play with her." Joseph realized he was rambling, almost fishing for praise, and stopped himself.
"Yeah, you should spend more time with her," Cassie said, not giving it much thought.
After all, many biological fathers do these things. Sophia and Oliver are different; even though she called Joseph a jerk, she still needed him.
After a pause, she added, "Since you've decided to be hands-on, take good care of her. She's still young; kicking off the blanket is inevitable."
Joseph was stunned. "How do you know so much? It's like you've had a child before."
Cassie was startled and quickly said, "I did have a child. No need to remind me."
Joseph was speechless, realizing he had said something wrong. "Sorry."
"I spend a lot of time with Sophia. She usually sleeps with me, so I understand kids well," Cassie said calmly. "Raising a child isn't just about spending money; you have to be responsible for her."
"I get it." Joseph nodded, his earnest demeanor making Cassie feel complicated.
She hadn't expected that one day, Joseph would be so obedient in front of her.
"By the way, are you staying overnight at the hospital?" Cassie asked.
"We were going to leave, but since she cried for you, I waited here," Joseph asked tentatively. "Can you hold her while I get the car?"
Without hesitation, Cassie took Sophia, checked her forehead, and felt relieved that Sophia had recovered from the fever.
Sophia was sleeping soundly, even snoring.
Soon, Joseph drove the car to the hospital entrance.
He opened the car door, and Cassie, holding Sophia, sat in the back seat.
Neon lights flashed by outside the window. Occasionally, Joseph saw Cassie holding Sophia through the rearview mirror. She looked down at Sophia, and the scene was beautiful and serene. He wished he could freeze this moment in time forever.
If he could, he would love to continue this life with her.
Unfortunately, he might never have that chance.
Before long, the car stopped at his private townhouse community.
Cassie was surprised. "You live here with her? Not with Mildred and Walter?"
"That place is in the suburbs, far from here. It's too late today, so we're not going there." Joseph parked the car, opened the back door, and took Sophia from her hands. "I'll take her; she's too heavy."
Cassie frowned. "Since she's asleep, I'll head back."
She had decided to start a new life with David, so staying with Joseph wasn't appropriate.
"The doctor said she might have a fever again tonight," Joseph called after her. "What should I do?"
Cassie glared at him for a moment but eventually followed him upstairs.
He placed Sophia on the large bed in the master bedroom. "You can rest in the next room. I'll stay with her."
"No. If I leave you here, you probably wouldn't even notice if she had a fever." Cassie rolled her eyes at him. "Leave the thermometer with me and go sleep in the next room."
"Alright." Joseph nodded and left.
As this was Joseph's bedroom, Cassie didn't dare to sleep on the bed. She just stayed on the sofa, sending a text to David: [I have to work late at the office until midnight. I'll sleep here tonight and won't be coming back. Sorry.]
After sending the message, she felt guilty.
However, she didn't want to leave as she saw Sophia's innocent face.
She sat for a long time until fatigue slowly crept in, and she dozed off on the sofa.
She wasn't fully asleep when she heard the door open softly. She woke up immediately but didn't open her eyes.
She didn't know what to say to Joseph if she faced him directly, and she didn't know what Joseph was up to.
When Joseph picked her up, Cassie quickly opened her eyes, nervously and warily glaring at him. "What are you doing? Put me down."
"I just want to carry you to the bed. It's late; you need to rest," Joseph explained, his deep, dark eyes falling to her pale face.
"I don't need to, and I won't lie on your bed," Cassie said decisively.
"You have lain on my bed many times." Joseph raised an eyebrow. Despite wanting to control himself, he instinctively showed a hint of flirtation with her.
Cassie's face flushed, and she said angrily, "That was before. I have a husband now."
"So what? You were in my bed on your wedding night with him," Joseph saw her pale face slowly turn red under the light, stunningly beautiful, and he blurted out.
"Joseph, you are too much." Cassie was extremely embarrassed, but with Sophia in the room, she didn't want to wake her. Even though she was angry, she kept her voice low. "You can't even have sex with anymore. Can't you behave?"
As he heard that, Joseph's handsome face immediately turned pale.
Cassie bit her lip, suddenly regretting her blunt words. For a man, it was heartbroken for impotence.
"Since you know that, you shouldn't worry. Even if I wanted to make love to you, I couldn't," After a long pause, Joseph said in a low voice.
But his words were too blunt. In the quiet night, Cassie still felt like she was being teased. "But you're still a man."
"I'm not a man anymore," Joseph interrupted her.
Cassie was left speechless.
She looked up at him, seeing Joseph's lonely and restrained expression, and suddenly didn't know what to say.
