Chapter 1508 Matchmaking

Until the crowd thinned out, Laura turned to Derek and asked, "Is the 14th Ferris wheel we just rode really that popular?"

"Yep, pulled a few strings," Derek said with a grin. "Since we're here, might as well ride the most special one."

"But isn't the 14th Ferris wheel for couples?" Laura felt a bit weird, with a mix of emotions she couldn't quite pin down.

"Come on, just 'cause I'm single, I can't ride it?" Derek gave her a mock-hurt look.

"That's not what I meant," Laura quickly replied.

"I've never been on a Ferris wheel, and no one's ever gone with me. Saw it online and got curious," Derek said, smiling at her. "Thanks for coming with me tonight. The fireworks were amazing."

"Yeah, they really were," Laura said, tucking her hair behind her ear and smiling.

Back at the Presidential Palace, Derek pulled a capsule toy from his pocket and handed it to her. "Got this while you were in the restroom. Open it later."

"Sure," Laura said, flashing him a bright smile before getting out of the car.

In her room, Laura opened the capsule toy to find a music box shaped like a princess castle. She played the music, and Maeve immediately started flailing her limbs in ecstasy.

Laura kissed Maeve's forehead and whispered, "Maeve, Mommy's not sad anymore, really. Things are gonna get better and better."

Suddenly, Laura felt like maybe things weren't so bad after all.

She thought she'd be exhausted and fall asleep right away, but instead, she had insomnia. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the grand fireworks from tonight in her mind, too excited to sleep.

Luckily, being young had its perks, and she still looked good the next day.

At breakfast, Derek showed up wearing a black down jacket, a white shirt underneath, and a brown scarf around his neck. Laura immediately recognized the scarf as the one she had given him yesterday. She didn't expect him to wear it so soon.

The pleasure that her gift was appreciated even gave her a good appetite over breakfast.

Violet took a sip of porridge and casually asked, "Where did you go last night? You two were so late to come back."

Before Laura could answer, Derek lazily replied, "She was in a bad mood, so I took her out for a couple of drinks."

Violet looked at Laura with concern.

Laura was still puzzled, not understanding why Derek lied.

"She found out about Michael's wedding," Derek added.

Violet frowned, looking at Laura with more sympathy. "Michael's invitation arrived yesterday, but we are not planning to go."

"Godmother, it's all good. I've made peace with it," Laura said, trying to sound upbeat.

Violet nodded, appreciating Laura's resilience. Violet herself was a strong woman and didn't have much patience for those who were overly fragile. "That's the spirit. You're still young and beautiful. Finding a good man won't be hard. I know a few guys with solid backgrounds and good character. I'll send you their Facebook profiles later so you can get to know them."

Laura stayed quiet.

Derek, clearly annoyed, said, "Mom, isn't the First Lady supposed to be busy? Yet you seem fixated on playing matchmaker."

Violet shot him a look. "I do have a lot of social engagements, and because of that, I know quite a few people with good backgrounds. Laura spends all her time in the lab and has a small social circle, so I keep an eye out for good men for her."

She turned to Laura and added, "I'm doing this for your own good. Michael is getting married, and it doesn't look great for you. If you find someone better, it'll be a slap in the face to Megan and Michael. Show Michael that if he didn't cherish you, someone else will."

Derek grumbled, "Laura comes home every day to take care of Maeve. When does she have time to date?"

"She can chat on Facebook first," Violet said calmly. "If they get along, they can meet. Relationships take time to develop. It's not like you can understand someone in a day or two. Besides, I didn't say Laura has to get married if she dates. Women should enjoy the moment."

Derek felt frustrated but didn't dare to push it. Violet was too sharp, and saying more might give him away.

Laura had nothing to say either. Violet wasn't entirely wrong, and her views were pretty open. She was doing it for Laura's good. If Laura refused, it would seem ungrateful.

Anyway, some chats with some handsome men didn't hurt, and if it didn't work out, they could just be friends.

"Okay, Godmother, I'll listen to you," Laura nodded.

Derek was fuming.

After leaving the dining room, Derek asked, clearly upset, "Do you really want to date?"

"Not really," Laura replied, finding his reaction odd. "Godmother is just looking out for me, and my social circle is pretty small. Why are you so upset?"

She suddenly thought of something, but Derek quickly said, "I'm worried that if you date, you'll neglect Maeve. Maeve needs her mom."

"Don't worry, Maeve is still my top priority right now," Laura assured him. She was about to head to work when she remembered something. "By the way, why did you lie to Godmother earlier?"
