Chapter 619
"Why do you suppose I struck you?" Joseph demanded, his fingers gripping the collar of the man before him. "Three years ago, you were quite the accomplished schemer. You aided Cassie in faking her death, making a fool out of me. Have I been too lenient with you, Liam? Despite your previous plots against me, I let them slide. But now you dare to conspire against me once more?"
Liam's lips twisted into a smirk. "You have quite the nerve to say that. Had it not been for me, there would have been casualties three years ago."
Joseph's anger surged at the thought of his half-brother coveting Cassie. "I was trying to heal Cassie, yet you and she played this game of false death. Why did you help her? What is your game this time, Liam? Are you smitten with her?" His heart pounded with fury, the desire to end Liam's life right there nearly overwhelming him.
"You've been traveling abroad frequently these past few years, haven't you?" Joseph continued, his voice laced with suspicion. "Did you journey overseas to visit her?"
"You were trying to heal her?" Liam's gaze met Joseph's, his expression incredulous. "You have the nerve to say that. Do you have any idea what state she was in when I found her in the hospital? She was unrecognizable. I had doctors from overseas examine her, and they said she had been overdosed on psychiatric drugs, which had scrambled her brain. It took half a year of medication for her to recover. The doctors said that Cassie was never ill to begin with. Normal people would have issues if they ingested medication like that, you know? If I hadn't intervened when I did, Cassie would have developed real problems, even if she wasn't sick."
Joseph recoiled, disbelief etched on his face. "This is impossible. You're trying to deceive me again. Not a word you say is true."
The thought that Megan could have deceived him was unthinkable to Joseph.
If Liam's words held truth, a chill swept through Joseph's heart at the thought of Megan's innocent and kind face.
"If you choose not to believe me, there's nothing I can do," Liam retorted, frustration evident in his tone. "Despite your cunning in the business world, you're utterly clueless when it comes to matters of the heart involving Megan. Regardless, I saved her because I genuinely felt sorry for her. Every day, Cassie was kept under your confinement, and her disfigured face was partly my fault. I've always felt remorse."
Joseph's gaze bore into him. "Do you truly harbor no feelings for her?"
"How dare you? So what if I do?" Liam retorted, an eyebrow arched in defiance, a devilish smile playing on his lips. "You have Megan, why do you care so much? You shouldn't be so concerned about it, I presume?"
"You're overthinking it. I simply find it repugnant for two brothers to share a woman," Joseph's words were cold and cruel. "The Hernandez family would never condone such a thing."
Liam's displeasure was palpable. "My personal life is none of your concern."
"Try me," Joseph retorted, pointing a finger at Liam's chest. His condescending demeanor incensed Liam, causing his handsome face to flush with anger.
"What are you doing?" The voice of Mabel suddenly filled the room. She took a few steps forward, her eyes landing on the blood at the corner of Liam's mouth. In a fit of anger, she slapped Joseph.
Joseph seized Mabel's arm, his gaze icy. "Since you have so much time to meddle in my affairs, why don't you focus on your own husband?"
Mabel's eyes trembled. The rise of Chamberlain over the years had shocked her, but she could never believe that Marcus was the puppeteer behind it all. He was the man she had loved since college. "Marcus has nothing to do with any of this. Chamberlain's success has nothing to do with him. Why do you continue to target him?"
"After all these years, you still haven't realized anything. I really don't know how your son came from such a foolish mind," Joseph shook his head and walked away, his face devoid of emotion.
"Idiot," Mabel muttered, trembling with anger.
"Liam, are you okay? Why did you clash with Joseph?" Mabel quickly asked, concern etched on her face.
"I'm fine, Mom. It's just a minor issue. He won't come looking for trouble with me," Liam forced a smile. "You go on and do your thing."
Once Mabel had left, Liam's gaze dropped to the pen in his hand, his grip tightening until it nearly snapped.
The feeling of constant oppression by Joseph was something Liam truly resented. Just like every other time, Joseph had stormed in and beaten him down with his arrogant manner.
