Chapter 497
The moment Celeste's gaze fell upon Cassie, she felt a prickling sensation of anger. " Cassie, what audacity you have to show your face here," she demanded, her voice laced with venom.
Her hatred for Cassie ran deep and bitter. It was because of Cassie that Joseph had ascended to the position of CEO of Hernandez Insurance, a position that Celeste had always believed was rightfully hers. Instead, she was left with nothing but empty hours to fill.
Every thought of Cassie ignited a firestorm of fury within Celeste.
"Why shouldn't I be here, Auntie? After all, I am Joseph's wife," Cassie retorted, her lips curling into a defiant smile.
"Don't you dare call me auntie!" Celeste's voice was a sharp, heated rebuke. "You're not worthy of the title. You disgust me, truth be told."
"Indeed, you're nothing more than an illegitimate child. We'll never acknowledge you as part of our family," Juliette chimed in, her words dripping with scorn.
"Don't test my patience," Cassie warned, her voice soft but carrying an undercurrent of steel.
At that, Celeste laughed, a harsh, mocking sound. "And what if I do provoke you? What if I strike you? What will you do then?"
As she spoke, Celeste raised her hand to strike Cassie, but Juliette reached out to restrain her. "Mom, Grandma is..."
Celeste's movement halted as she turned to see her mother approaching. Her expression was inscrutable, but Celeste responded with a dismissive shrug. "So what? She's just as repulsed by this shameless creature as we are."
She tried to resume her attack, but Cassie intercepted her, catching her wrist.
With a swift, forceful jerk, Celeste pulled free from Cassie's grip, sending Cassie stumbling backward.
The sudden movement startled their grandmother.
"My dear, are you alright?" She rushed over, her voice filled with concern.
A sneer twisted Celeste's lips. "Mom, I'm perfectly fine..."
Her words trailed off as she watched her mother fussing over Cassie, as if she was genuinely concerned that Cassie might be hurt.
"Grandma... you..." Juliette sat in stunned silence, unable to comprehend the scene unfolding before her. Surely, she must have misheard. There was no way her grandmother would address Cassie so affectionately.
"I'm fine, Grandma," Cassie murmured, her brow furrowed in discomfort as she gingerly touched her stomach. "But I'm worried about my baby."
"You're pregnant?" Celeste's voice was a strangled gasp, her shock palpable.
