Chapter 1573 She Was Too Much

Laura stared blankly at the messages, filled with Derek's concern.

She suddenly felt as if she had woken up.

Definitely, those colleagues at the research institute who often went out to eat, drink, and have fun at night were all under forty. They didn't necessarily know more than she did.

Even if they were willing to share knowledge with her, how much can she really learn?

Spending so much time drinking and chatting with them was not as valuable as spending more time on research and interacting with those old professors. A single sentence from an old professor was worth more than a hundred from Finnley and his group.

She regretted blurting out those hurtful words to him last night.

Why did she say such hurtful things?

She even thought about breaking up with Derek.

She was too much.

Derek was right. She hadn't known those colleagues for long. Take Finnley, for example; despite knowing she was married, he suggested she date him. Who knew what Finnley might do if she got drunk?

She was a woman alone in the Selaestan, where she was unfamiliar with. If something happened, no one could help her.

By the way, what would happen to Maeve? She might end up being taken by Michael, and Megan, that vicious woman, would become Maeve's stepmother.

She quickly got up to call Derek.

When the call connected, she didn't hear his voice first but Maeve's crying.

"Laura, I'll call you back later. Maeve pooped, and I need to clean her up," Derek said hurriedly.

"Okay, okay." Laura responded.

After hanging up, Laura sat in a daze for a while.

It wasn't until nine in the morning that Derek called back, "Have you been waiting long? I've been busy."

Laura understood that his busyness was definitely for Maeve.

Laura bit her lip in frustration and said softly, "Derek, I'm sorry. You've been taking care of Maeve, and I got mad at you while being abroad."

"My attitude last night wasn't great either," Derek quickly said.

"Alright, you don't need to say that. It's normal for you to have a bad attitude," Laura interrupted him. "I saw the message you sent me. You're right; I shouldn't have drunk so much. I promise you, I'll try not to go out for meals and drinks anymore. I'll focus on my research here and build good relationships with those old professors. I won't make you worry anymore."

"As long as you're not mad," Derek said with a bitter smile. "I was really afraid you'd break up with me in anger."

Laura guiltily knocked her head, "How could I? I was just in a bad mood because I drank too much. And because you've always been so good to me, I couldn't handle it when you suddenly got mad at me."

"Baby, I want to spoil you unconditionally, but if you do something wrong, I will still point it out sternly," Derek said gently, "I'm afraid you'll get hurt if I don't persuade you. I've studied abroad and seen too many dark sides of people, so I have to remind you that many men can't be judged by their appearances."

"Yes, I understand," Laura was particularly obedient, "Don't worry, I don't like them either. They all know I have a child and think I'm married. But there's a colleague who, knowing I'm married, still suggested we have a secret affair abroad. I find it very repulsive."

Fortunately, it was a phone call, and she had no idea that Derek on the other end had already been angry.

Derek reminded, "Such men are very unfaithful and have low moral standards. Stay away from them."

Derek rubbed his temples. Luckily, he had lost his temper last night and reminded Laura in time. Otherwise, he wouldn't feel at ease leaving such a beautiful girlfriend abroad.

"Yes, I will," Laura responded briskly.

After Laura finished speaking, she had more to say but blushed, "Derek, I..."

"What is it?" Derek asked gently.

"Nothing, I have to work now. Bye," Laura mumbled.

"Okay, you go ahead," Derek replied.

Two minutes after Derek put down his phone, he received a message from Laura on Facebook: [I love you, that's what I wanted to say earlier.]

His pupils contracted sharply, and he took a deep breath before replying: [If it weren't for Maeve, I would definitely fly over right now and make love to you hard.]

Laura: [You pervert, I'm serious. I'm not talking to you anymore.]

Derek: [I'm serious too. I miss you.]

In the lab far away in the Selaestan, Laura's face turned red.

How had she not noticed before that Derek could be so lustful?

However, Laura didn't feel repulsed. On the contrary, she found herself secretly wanting to make love to him too.

"What are you talking about with your boyfriend? you're blushing," Natalia teased as she walked over.

"Nothing," Laura quickly put down her phone.

Natalia sighed, "You two have so much to talk about. Facebook during the day, video calls at night."

She remembered a few times when she went to find Laura in the evening and found Laura and her boyfriend on video calls for two or three hours.

"Don't you have words with your husband?" Laura asked.

"We do, but after being married for a few years, we mostly talk about trivial matters at home," Natalia said, "Love has long turned into family affection. After being away for a few months, I don't really miss my husband."

Laura was stunned. She and Derek were the exact opposite, transitioning from family affection to love.

In the past, Laura had feelings of liking, dependence, and trust towards Derek. But after their argument last night, their relationship wasn't affected. Instead, she felt sorry for Derek, missed him, and cared about his feelings. This was probably love.

The feeling of falling in love with someone was something she hadn't experienced in a long time.

When Laura was young, she thought she had found true love with Benjamin, who was two years older than her, and pursued it recklessly.

Now, at twenty-six, Laura had met Derek, who was the same age. Being with him make her feel warm and secure. He indulged her, protected her, and guided her.

She loved him; she had already fallen in love with him.

When he said, "I want to spoil you unconditionally, but if you do something wrong, I will still point it out sternly," she deeply realized that Derek was worth cherishing.

"By the way, would you go out for dinner with them tonight, too?" Natalia asked.

"I'm not going," Laura shook her head. "My boyfriend doesn't want me to go. We even had a fight about it last night."

"If you're not going, I won't go either. It's not safe to go alone," Natalia said, shaking her head.

'Yes, it's better for girls to be cautious,' Laura thought to herself, grateful that Derek had reminded her in time.
