Chapter 628

Joseph had grown accustomed to the disdain of others, their scorn as predictable as the hurling of tomatoes. Yet, it had been some time since he had been subjected to such casual dismissal, the kind that didn't even warrant the effort of a heated insult. "Who told you to dawdle?" Cassie drawled, her voice laced with boredom. "I was out buying clothes for you," he retorted, his voice a mixture of frustration and resignation. "Did I ask you to ruin mine? If you're hungry, eat; if you're cold, warm it up," Cassie shot back, her tone sharp and unyielding. Joseph glared at her retreating figure, his gaze burning into her back as she walked away, utterly indifferent to his ire. She moved to the laundry room, her mind filled with thoughts of the man who was slowly driving her to the brink of insanity. The need to wash her clothes before she could wear them, the necessity of drying them before she could put them on, it was all so infuriating. Joseph's eyes ached from the intensity of his glare. Eventually, the gnawing hunger won over his stubbornness. He heated the meal and devoured it. It was a simple bowl of tomato noodles, yet its aroma was tantalizing, its taste far superior to the steak Megan had prepared the previous night. He finished his meal in one go, yet he was left wanting more. He walked towards the bathroom door, caught sight of Cassie engrossed in her laundry, paused for a moment, and then left. As Cassie drove past a bustling street, the tantalizing aroma of tomato noodles filled the air. Vendors were busy frying up servings, their stalls crowded with eager customers. Joseph bought a bowl, took a bite, and immediately criticized, "Your tomato noodles are terrible.""Excuse me?" The vendor was furious. "I have been making these noodles for over ten years, and business is booming. You're the only one who's complained."A college student waiting in line chimed in, "He's right, these are the best tomato noodles around."Joseph fell silent. Was it possible that he had been spoiled by Cassie's cooking? Regardless of the vendor's decade-long experience, his noodles paled in comparison to Cassie's. Back at the villa, Megan greeted him in a seductive nightgown. Her gaze hardened slightly at the sight of his empty hands. "Joseph, why are you so late?" she asked, her voice steady. "I had to work late," Joseph responded, his mind wandering back to the events at Cassie's house. "Really?" Megan's hopeful expression faltered. "Joseph, did Cassie threaten you at the company meeting today?"
"Yeah," Joseph admitted, the memory suddenly resurfacing. He had intended to confront Cassie for upsetting Megan during the meeting, but the thought had slipped his mind the moment he had stepped through the door.
He felt even guiltier. "Megan, I'm sorry.""Joseph, don't apologize. You did everything for me. I can handle a little hardship," Megan reassured him, wrapping her arms around him. "I'm just worried that she will take you away from me. After the meeting, she threatened to destroy everything I care about.""Destroy?" Joseph's gaze hardened. "Who does she think she is?"Any lingering guilt he had felt towards Cassie evaporated in that moment. She was not deserving of his kindness. It was clear now why she had been so reluctant to divorce; she had never intended to in the first place. Megan sighed, "I tried to reason with her, to convince her to let us go our separate ways, but she wouldn't listen. She's too impulsive. What good will come from us tearing each other apart? You know that many of the companies that have partnered with Peace Group over the past three years did so because of you."Joseph's heart skipped a beat as he gently stroked Megan's hair. "You're right. If those companies sever their ties with Peace Group, it would be disastrous for them. If Cassie wants to save Peace Group, she'll have to agree to a peaceful divorce.""Joseph, what are you thinking?" Megan looked up at him, her hand covering her mouth. "This doesn't seem right.""Don't worry, our plans to get married this year are already public knowledge. If I don't divorce her, what will you do?" Joseph reassured her, pulling her into a gentle embrace.
