Chapter 139

"However, as soon as they had settled in, they sensed that something was amiss with the Anderson camp.

Sam looked distressed, and Felix was constantly drinking water, a clear sign of anxiety.
Glancing over at Cassie, I saw she was chatting with Laura Miller, though I couldn't catch what about. Laura, however, was in fits of laughter.

Beside them, their lawyer was even more outrageous, engrossed in a video game.

""I'll go ask,"" Robert said, a hint of unease creeping into his voice as he approached Sam. ""What’s up with Felix? He doesn't seem right.""

Sam shot him a scathing glare. ""Your daughter’s quite accomplished, isn’t she?""

Perplexed, Robert was about to reply when Felix sighed, ""Cassie's managed to pull in the undefeated legend of Madison. This case... it's looking pretty grim for me.""

No, not just grim. It seemed there wasn't even a chance of victory.

""The undefeated legend?!"" Robert was stunned. ""You were so confident before, talking about a sure win.""

Felix wore an expression that said ‘you don't know the half of it’: ""Come on, as the CEO of a major corporation, you've never heard of Joseph Hernandez? Sure, he's young, but he’s never lost a case. Nobody can beat him. Even my mentor went down in flames against him when the evidence was indisputable.""

Robert was flabbergasted; no wonder Cassie hadn't shown a hint of worry. But when had she come to know such an influential figure?

""How likely are we to win?"" Robert probed, searching for some sliver of hope.

Felix frowned, almost amused, ""What’s with you? Cassie's your daughter. Shouldn’t you be happy if she wins?""

Robert was speechless.

Happy? How could he be when, if Cassie avoided jail, it might be Alexander's turn to face misfortune?

If Felix truly couldn't win, Robert had to think of an alternative. If push came to shove, he would have to sacrifice Alexander—after all, they didn't share the same last name. His fate shouldn't be Robert’s burden.

""Let's just see how it unfolds. Better she avoids a sentence, I guess. Just worried Mr. Anderson might take it hard,"" Robert muttered, quickly retreating back to his seat.

Just then, the judge entered, signaling the formal start of the proceedings.

Cassie tensed up, casting a glance at Joseph Hernandez, only to find him calmly putting away his phone, his handsome face as composed as if he were not about to fight in court, but strolling through a supermarket.

The judge rapped the gavel, announcing the start of the trial.

Felix from Sam's side rose, presenting evidence and laying out the charges against Cassie.

The jury nodded along, the evidence seemingly conclusive.

The judge turned to Joseph Hernandez, ""Does the defense have any objections?""
Joseph Hernandez stood up, his gaze cool and detached. ""My client pleads not guilty, as this entire ordeal has nothing to do with him from start to finish. It was all orchestrated by the project manager, Alexander.""

His declaration sent a shockwave through the courtroom. Alexander, unable to contain himself, stood up in a fury. ""That's bullshit!""

The judge interjected with a stern warning. ""Watch your language, please.""

After a brief pause, he continued, ""Defense counsel, do you have any evidence to support this claim?""

With a swift motion, Joseph Hernandez produced a stack of documents. ""Here's a transcript of texts between Alexander and the intermediary, Ben. The substandard wiring was all Ben’s doing, arranged under the guise of legitimate work. Then, both he and Alexander took their cut of the profits; over six million for Alexander, a million for Ben. I also have photos of Alexander and Ben's frequent visits to certain exclusive establishments.""

Once the documents and photos were handed over, panic set in for Alexander. He had not anticipated that his role as a mere witness would flip to being accused by Cassie.

""This is defamation,"" he stammered.

""If the court finds the evidence insufficient,"" Joseph continued with unwavering calm, ""we're prepared to bring in the witness, Ben.""
