Chapter 163
"Cassie blushed furiously as she approached, her small hands fumbling beneath the covers in blind search without success.
""When will you ever be done?"" Joseph glared at her with cheeks aflame.
Bracing herself, Cassie dove headfirst under the blanket. At that moment, the doctor walked in, ""Mr. Hernandez, I'm here to check on—""
Freezing at the scene before him, his face turned scarlet.
""My apologies, is this a bad time? I'll just step out... right away...""
Cassie scrambled out, dumbfounded. Oh no, did the doctor get the wrong idea?
""It's not what it looks like, Doctor, I was just—""
""I understand, I didn't see a thing. I'll come back later."" the doctor said, his face red and eyes darting away as he hurried to the door.
Pausing at the exit, he couldn't help but add, ""I know you two are young, but be mindful, he's just had surgery.""
""I wasn't—""
Cassie couldn't finish before the doctor practically bolted from the room.
Fighting back tears, she wished she could just jump off the building and end it all.
Angrily glaring at the instigator in the bed, she accused, ""This is all your fault.""
""My fault?"" A wince crossed Joseph's brow. ""Well, yes, my fault for saving you. If I hadn't, you'd be lying in a morgue by now, and I wouldn't be in this predicament where I need help even to pee...""
""Stop it,"" Cassie shivered, ""it's not your fault. You're my hero.""
""There's a good girl,"" Joseph's eyes flickered, ""you can take it away now.""
She breathed a sigh of relief. As she was about to grab a glass of water to calm her nerves, he spoke up again, ""Now you can help me wash up.""
Hesitation washed over her, ""Maybe we should call Walter. I can't do this. I've been infatuated with the memory of your perfect body since that one glimpse, and I'm afraid I might...""
Joseph's lips twisted into a half-smile, ""I'm only injured in the upper body.""
Cassie nearly bit her tongue off.
This time, she closed the door carefully behind her.
Although she had caught a fleeting glimpse of his body before, she had never studied him as closely as now. His physique was truly admirable, reminiscent of Michelangelo's David.
She scoffed to herself; he used to act as if an extra glance from her was a sacrilege, and now, he was practically encouraging her stare.
Joseph observed her flushed expression—the way she was ogling his body was no secret. Despite her cheeks being painted with blush, she kept her eyes fixed on him.
But as she wiped, something felt off. His expression darkened, ""Hurry up, how long will it take?""
Embarrassed, Cassie realized her lingering. She quickly finished the task and poured out the water.
After her shower, Cassie snuffed out the light and settled into the cot next to the bed.
Having suffered enough from her restless sleep, sprawled across him every night, Joseph hadn't offered to share his bed. With his current injuries, he simply couldn't handle it.
Cassie dared not drift too deeply into sleep, and in the dead of night, she was awakened by the sound of Joseph shifting restlessly. Concern etching her face, she sat up and asked, ""Are you in a lot of pain?""
A sliver of moonlight spilling through the window illuminated Joseph as he opened his eyes. She hadn't had the chance to grab her clothes for the night, and wore a snug, thin undershirt. Her long hair fell softly around her shoulders, exuding a certain allure. In truth, he could bear the pain, but the words transformed as they reached his lips: ""Yeah, it hurts.""
""What... what should we do?"" Cassie felt guilty. ""Should I call the doctor?""
