Chapter 162

"Joseph frowned. ""Nothing suspicious? What about the man who took Miss Brooks inside? He seemed careful enough at the time.""

""He was just there to help Miss Brooks survey the place. They got so caught up in conversation that he forgot to give her a hard hat.""

""Caught up?"" Joseph's finger tapped the comforter before he let out a derisive snort.

Walter tensed, hoping jealousy wasn't the issue. ""That's how salespeople are, good at chatting up anyone.""

""In any event, he's going to face serious consequences this time,"" Joseph said coolly. ""Send him a lawyer's letter. If Peace Group's compensation isn't satisfactory, I won't let it go.""

""Will do.""

Just then, Cassie came out with the food she'd prepared, pausing when she saw Walter. ""Sorry, I only made enough for two.""

""No worries, I've already eaten. Plus, I'm heading out,"" Walter replied, eyeing the table with disbelief at the spartan meal in a hospital of all places.

But to his surprise, Mr. Hernandez didn't voice a single complaint.

After setting the table, Cassie glanced at his usable left hand. ""Do you need help eating, or can you manage?""

""What do you think? How am I supposed to eat with my left hand?"" Joseph's brow furrowed in irritation.

Walter barely concealed a smirk; Mr. Hernandez's left hand was obviously capable.

""Get lost,"" Joseph dismissed him with a cold gaze.

""Right, I'm off,"" Walter said hastily, making his exit.
""Why are you so hard on Walter? I think he's actually pretty decent,"" Cassie couldn't help but feel a twinge of sympathy for Walter.

""Decent?"" Joseph Hernande retorted with a hint of disbelief. ""Better than me?""

Cassie paused, giving him a curious look. ""You sound... almost jealous.""

""Jealous?"" Joseph Hernandez's expression wavered for a second as if he'd heard a joke, ""Jealous of you? Are you hallucinating? I'm just reminding you not to forget who has pulled your fat out of the fire time and again.""

""Sure, sure, I remember. Let's eat before you starve yourself. I'd feel terrible if something happened to you."" Cassie quickly changed the subject, eager to avoid a lecture. She started spoon-feeding him.

Previously, Joseph Hernandez wouldn't have touched such simple fare, but now, as Cassie fed him, each bite seemed to taste better than the last. He found himself wanting more.

After the meal, Joseph's eyes fluttered lazily. ""I need to get up to use the bathroom.""

Cassie moved to assist him, but remembering his back injury, hesitated before wrapping her arm carefully around his waist. Even through the thin hospital gown, she could feel his lean muscles.

As Joseph sat up, the pain from his stitches and shoulder wound made him shiver with cold, his face going deathly pale.

Startled, Cassie blurted out, ""Maybe you shouldn't move. I'll get you a bedpan.""

She fetched a brand-new bedpan from the nearby cabinet in a flash.

Flashes of embarrassment crossed Joseph's lips before he muttered softly, ""Help me with it.""

Cassie hesitated, overwhelmed. ""No, no, no. I can't.""

""You still have one good hand, right?"" she said, on the verge of tears.

""Don’t you see how much it hurts to even move?"" Joseph Hernandez grimaced, attempting to shift his position and quickly succumbing to the pain. ""Hurry up, unless you want me to wet the bed.""
