Chapter 324
"Cassie pursed her lips. She thought about Joseph's tone when she left the day before. Was it his doing?
Charles elaborated, ""We spent fifty billion on that plot. If we don't start working soon, our cash flow will break, and the company will collapse. All the shareholders, including you, could face jail time.""
""I'll figure something out,"" Cassie murmured after a moment.
After the meeting, she returned to her office to call Joseph, only to discover she had been blocked.
It seemed she had angered him.
Later, she reluctantly asked Leo for help, but he returned with confusion after his inquiries. ""Cassie, who have you upset? Even I'm being snubbed this time, and it's not Jayden's family's doing.""
""I don't know who I've upset. I'll think about it."" Cassie ended the call vaguely. She hadn't planned on asking Leo for funding anyway; the company wasn't just his. Securing billions would require the Chapmans' approval—a nod from Grandpa that was unlikely to come.
By the afternoon, Carter Harrison dropped by the office. ""Cassie, I've over ten billion in liquid assets that should help us hold the fort for a while.""
Cassie was touched. In a crisis like this, every shareholder only seemed interested in pointing fingers and covering their backs, none willing to contribute a dime.
""This is your mother's legacy. I can't stand to watch it fall apart,"" Carter sighed heavily. ""By the way, how's the investigation into your mother's death going?""
Cassie pondered for a moment. ""I don't think my mom's death is connected to the Jaydens. I ran into Clark once. He was brave about schemes against me and showed no fear. But when it came to my mom's death, he looked genuinely puzzled; he didn't seem like he was lying.""
""That's odd; the last call your mom got before she left was from New York,"" Carter mused. ""Could there be another player in the shadows?""
Cassie massaged her temples, her thoughts tangled.
Carter could see her exhaustion, and after a long moment of hesitation, he said, ""You're too young for this much pressure. If it's too much, maybe you should head back to Madison.""
""Maybe.""
Confusion clouded Cassie's mind. Sometimes, she doubted her decision to come to New York. She thought forming a good relationship with Leo might gradually tip the scales in her favor. Still, backed by the Hernandezs, the Jayden family was like an insurmountable mountain.
She was exhausted.
The following days were a blur as she ran from one meeting to another, only to be flat-out denied by the concerned authorities.
Emerging from the property bureau one day, she bumped into Liam.
Liam paused, surprised. It had been just a short while since he'd seen her, but Leo's supposed illegitimate daughter looked haggard as though she hadn't slept well in days.
Yet clad in a light blue knit top and a white skirt, her tall figure, stunning features, and casually draped black hair still held enough beauty to stir a man's pity.
""Miss Brooks, you look exhausted. Have you run into some trouble?"" Liam asked with a mischievous smile. His features were softer than Joseph's, who came across as too cold, but Liam had a rakish charm, especially when he smiled.
""Yeah, the company's hit a rough patch,"" Cassie nodded slightly.
Liam raised an eyebrow, intrigued, ""I happen to be on good terms with the director here. Maybe I can lend a hand.""
Cassie was taken aback. She hadn't considered asking for help, mainly since he was associated with the Hernandez family. But she seemed to be out of options.
""But remember, if I do this, you'll owe me a favor,"" Liam said with a playful wink.
Cassie smiled wryly, ""I'm just a small fry, Liam. I don't know if I can ever repay the favor.""
""Well, that's not necessarily true. A girl who can keep her cool in life-or-death situations has a bright future ahead,"" Liam suddenly grinned at her. ""I get where you're coming from. In the Hernandez family, I often get labeled the love child who broke up a household.""
