Chapter 1407 "Whoever protects her, we can't be friends."

Laura was staring out the window, watching the traffic below, feeling totally lost.

She was all kinds of messed up, probably since yesterday morning when she found out Michael had been lying to her.

She couldn't help herself and called Cassie, "So, this morning, I was having breakfast with Michael, and I brought up Megan. His reaction was just... off."

"Off how?" Cassie asked, feeling a bit uneasy.

"Not as grossed out as usual, like he didn't really wanna talk about it. I can't quite figure it out," Laura said, feeling torn.

"Maybe you're just overthinking it?" Cassie paused, trying to calm her down. "Megan did a lot of messed up stuff before, betrayed and humiliated him. No guy could just let that slide."

Laura had a sudden thought, "Yeah, whenever he mentioned her before, he looked like he wanted to punch a wall. But today, he just kept his head down."

Cassie couldn't totally dismiss her thoughts. Women are pretty sharp when it comes to their partners.

"There's more," Laura continued, feeling uneasy. "He was supposed to be on a business trip, but a friend saw him in Whisperlyn City yesterday morning. He lied, saying his flight was in the evening and he'd be back at night. When he came back, he had changed clothes. I went to his office yesterday, and he wasn't there. He didn't go to the Ocean Blue group either. I don't know why he lied."

"Do you think he's hiding Megan?" Cassie asked, voicing the thought Laura didn't want to face.

Laura was at a loss. After a long pause, she mumbled, "Maybe I'm overthinking it. He might have other stuff going on."

Laura didn't want to believe she was that unlucky.

Her first relationship ended in betrayal, and now her second, a marriage she wanted to work, was falling apart.

Michael said he liked her.

Laura had agreed to marry him because she thought being loved by him would be a happy thing.

"Yeah, that's possible," Cassie tried to comfort her. "And one time doesn't mean anything. It could be a misunderstanding, or he might be doing something he doesn't want you to know about. No couple is totally transparent. Even Joseph and I have our moments. Just keep an eye on things."

"By the way, he said he would get the ShadowNet Intelligence Agency to help you find Megan." Laura felt a bit better hearing that.

"Hopefully, they can find Megan soon," Cassie said. "We checked the surveillance records, and Megan did come to Whisperlyn City, but then she seemed to disappear. Joseph thinks she might be staying in an old house that doesn't need ID registration. He's planning to search those places more thoroughly."

"Alright."

"Don't stress too much. Leave this to us."

After hanging up, Cassie saw Joseph's car pulling into the driveway.

He came upstairs in a flash and hugged her from behind, "Cassie, I just dropped Oliver and Sophia off at preschool. Their teacher said there's a Halloween event coming up and wants us parents to join in."

"Preschool events are non-stop," Cassie remarked.

"It helps build that parent-kid bond, which is cool," Joseph kissed her cheek. "Plus, Sophia loves to show off. Every time we go, her classmates say we're the best-looking couple in the class. Bet you can't find a better-looking couple in all of Madison."

Cassie would usually joke, "Are we even a couple?" but today she wasn't feeling it. "Who's running the ShadowNet Intelligence Agency now?"

Joseph looked surprised, "Since Maeve was born, Michael's been in charge. Why do you ask?"

Cassie frowned.

If Michael was really hiding Megan, he might say he'd use the ShadowNet Intelligence Agency to find her, but if he wanted to cover it up, he could make it even harder to find Megan.

"Nothing, I just heard Laura say Michael would use the ShadowNet Intelligence Agency to help us find Megan."

"Oh, that. Michael called me this morning too," Joseph said.

"What did he say?"

Joseph gave her a weird look, "I was planning to ask Carl for help if we couldn't find her, but Michael said he didn't want to cause unnecessary speculation and panic in Whisperlyn City. He offered to have the ShadowNet Intelligence Agency help us. I thought he had a point."

Cassie fell silent, her brow furrowed.

"What's wrong, babe?" Joseph turned her around, "What's bugging you?"

"I was just thinking, can we really trust Michael when it comes to Megan?" Cassie suddenly said. "If he's hiding something, using the ShadowNet Intelligence Agency might make it even harder to find her."

Joseph was stunned, "Are you kidding? Didn't you tell me Michael was hurt badly by Megan?"

"Yeah, but he also loved her deeply. Of course, I don't want this to be true. After all, he's Laura's husband. I just think we should be more cautious."

Joseph was pissed, "No matter what, I will find Megan. Anyone protecting her won't be my friend anymore."

"Leave it to me," Cassie sighed. "Just act like you don't suspect anything and don't tell anyone. If I'm wrong, it would be unfair to Michael."

Joseph pinched her cheek, "Cassie, leaving everything to you makes me feel useless."

"Who said you're useless? You're still very useful in bed," Cassie kissed his lips.

Joseph lowered his head, "More."

"Move, I gotta go out."

In the following days, Michael came home on time.

Sometimes, he would even take Laura and Maeve for a walk after dinner.

As Laura walked by the lake in their neighborhood, her recent worries started to fade away.

One evening, while having dinner at the Jude Estate, Caroline looked at the happy family of three and felt comforted, "When are you two gonna have the wedding?"

Laura was stunned, realizing that although she and Michael had a child, they still hadn't had a wedding.
