Chapter 1363 This Seems a Bit Over the Top
"But you're making me uncomfortable." Laura was breathing heavily, thinking, 'Michael's trying to use his looks to reel me in. No way, I'm not falling for this jerk's tricks.'
"What's wrong with my body?" Michael felt pretty insulted. He used to hit the gym and swim every day, always confident about his physique.
"Everything about you, from head to toe, makes me uncomfortable," Laura shot back.
The room went dead silent after that.
Michael's face darkened. He knew he was trying to use his looks to tempt Laura, but not only did he fail, he got humiliated. He was fuming. 'Am I really that bad? Sure, I've messed up before, but I'm trying to change. I want to be a good husband and dad. But no matter what I do, it seems useless. Whether it's Megan or Laura.' He felt like a total failure. Keeping a cold face, he said nothing.
Laura suddenly felt uneasy after her outburst. She had been trying to keep things cool with Michael, but now it seemed like everything was falling apart. 'Did I go too far?' she wondered.
"Alright, I'll be more careful next time," Michael said, grabbing his dirty clothes and storming out.
Laura opened her mouth, then lightly patted her forehead, thinking, 'Maybe I really suck at this emotional intelligence thing.'
Downstairs, Michael chugged a big glass of water, feeling so frustrated he wanted to call Lucas for a drink, but he held back. He was different now; for Maeve, he couldn't be like before.
After a while, he heard Maeve crying upstairs, so he went back to the bedroom. Maeve had pooped again. He picked her up from the crib, washed her bottom with the nanny, then gently rocked her to sleep and placed her in the middle of the bed. He and Laura each took a side, but they didn't say a word to each other. Laura, feeling she might have gone too far earlier, didn't say anything harsh to drive him away this time.
In the middle of the night, Laura, half-asleep, heard Maeve crying and had to pick her up to breastfeed.
While Laura was breastfeeding, Michael lay on his side.
After Laura finished breastfeeding, Maeve still wouldn't sleep and refused to lie quietly in bed. Michael held the baby and walked around the bedroom.
Laura initially wanted to wait for Maeve to fall asleep, but she couldn't hold on and went to sleep first.
The next morning, when Laura woke up, it was already 7 AM.
She glanced at the other side of the bed. Michael was holding Maeve in his arms, both of them sleeping soundly. Maeve even smiled sweetly, as if dreaming of something.
Laura's heart melted instantly.
So Laura didn't disturb them and went downstairs.
The nanny had prepared a carefully made breakfast for her, not only nutritious and delicious but also varied.
Rose came out and asked, "Are Maeve and Michael still sleeping?"
Before Laura could answer, the nanny sighed, "Maeve only crashed at 6 AM. When I got up to grab groceries, I saw Michael still pacing the living room with her."
Laura was stunned, thinking, 'I remember waking up around 3 AM. Did Maeve not sleep after that?'
"If Maeve keeps this up, it's gonna be a problem," Rose sighed. "Let them sleep. Save some breakfast for Michael later."
Laura said, "Maeve wasn't like this in the hospital; she slept pretty well."
"Newborns sleep more at first, but once they get used to the environment, they start fussing. They say babies sleep a lot in the first month, but I've seen plenty who don't sleep well at night."
Then she looked at Laura seriously, "I think it's 'cause you stayed up late during your pregnancy."
Laura felt awkward. She did stay up late sometimes. Even though Michael later made her go to bed by 9:30 PM, she didn't always listen and would secretly play on her phone after locking the door.
For the next while, Michael sometimes went to the office during the day. No matter how busy work was, he'd come home by 5:30 PM to be with Maeve.
But Maeve really started waking up at 2 or 3 AM and playing until 5 or 6 AM before sleeping.
Sometimes, after breastfeeding Laura would see Michael playing with Maeve in the middle of the night. Despite her hardened heart, she couldn't help but feel a bit sorry, "Why don't you sleep for a while, and I'll hold Maeve?"
"No need. My mom said that after giving birth, holding the baby can harm your arms. You just rest and sleep." Michael said lightly, then took the baby downstairs to avoid disturbing her rest.
Laura lay in bed alone, unable to sleep. She wasn't totally heartless. She knew how hard Michael worked, going to work during the day and taking care of the baby at night. Laura also knew that some things could be left to the nanny, but as long as Michael was home, he would personally take care of the baby.
She couldn't help but message Cassie on Facebook. Cassie replied: [I'm so jealous. When I had my baby, I had to do everything myself and didn't get much rest at night.]
Laura: [Enough, you're living in a castle now. I've never lived in a castle in my life.]
Cassie: [Haha, be content. You know how hard it was for me when I had my baby. Don't look at how well I'm living now; you saw how much I struggled back then. If it weren't for your help, I might have broken down.]
Laura couldn't help but recall those days. Watching Cassie struggle was heartbreaking. Thinking about it, Laura realized she was indeed much happier than Cassie now.
In the blink of an eye, it had been thirty days since Maeve was born, and Laura's body had recovered well. The Jude family held a grand banquet to celebrate Maeve's birth.
Although Maeve was still very young, James booked the top floor of the Skyline Hotel and threw a grand feast for her.
As Maeve's mom, Laura wanted to dress up, but when she opened her wardrobe, she realized she had gained weight from eating so well over the past month.
