Chapter 408
"Do you like it?" inquired Joseph, his voice laced with a soft chuckle as he watched her, his head tilted in curiosity.
"Why the sudden gift of a car? I already have one," Cassie responded, striving to maintain her composure, determined not to be swept away by his charismatic charm.
"That old thing? It's hardly fitting for my wife. I want you to have the best," Joseph retorted, pressing the car key. The doors of the vehicle opened smoothly, like wings unfurling, revealing the luxurious yet understated interior.
"I love it, thank you," Cassie replied, her nod sincere.
In the past, she might have declined his offer. But now, as his wife, she accepted it wholeheartedly.
"Just a 'thank you'?" Joseph queried, his eyebrow arched teasingly, clearly unsatisfied. "No other token of appreciation?"
His look made Cassie's cheeks flush. "What token do you want? I'm your wife, what's yours is mine."
"You're so right, I am all yours," Joseph murmured, leaning in closer. He pinned her against the doorframe, capturing her lips in a passionate kiss that lingered before he reluctantly pulled away. "Sweetheart, you just keep getting sweeter."
"I can't deal with you right now, I'm off to work," Cassie protested, inwardly groaning at his sudden shift from his once cool demeanor to this almost sickening sweetness.
Yet, deep in her heart, she felt completely at ease. This man didn't care that she wasn't as beautiful as before; he still cherished her just the same.
She navigated her new car through the quiet morning streets. The unfamiliar luxury sports car, with its ostentatious license plate, turned many heads on the road.
As she found herself in a traffic jam at the intersection, her phone rang. It was Laura Miller on the other end.
"OMG, Cassie, this morning the internet is freaking out over a super luxurious sports car. I'm so jealous," Laura gushed.
"Huh?"
"I'm telling you, it's a white sports car. Rumor has it, it's not even available in the states, with a whopping eight-million-dollar price tag, and it's custom-made! And to top it off, the plate says 'FOREVER.' So much for subtlety, it's like a slap in the face to us single peeps, makes 'I LOVE YOU' seem so pedestrian."
"..." So 'FOREVER' isn't pedestrian?
"You should get Joseph to buy you one, given how loaded he is. Take a clue from that romantic gesture. I sent you the video, hint to him."
"Actually... that car is mine."
"What?"
"Yeah, that car everyone is talking about with the 'FOREVER' plate, Joseph gave it to me this morning. I've only driven it for half an hour..." She hadn't realized it had already gone viral.
Laura was silent for a moment before wailing, "Are you trying to make this single soul green with envy? Since when did Joseph stop being the insensitive jerk and become Mr. Romance?"
"I have no idea." Cassie couldn't help but smirk. "If you're so envious, why not find a guy yourself? You've been in New York for a while and still haven't spotted one?"
"I'm not ready for a relationship..."
"Is it that you're not ready, or can't get over Benjamin," Cassie sighed.
"Don't bring him up. The mere mention of that name makes me cringe."
"Well then, seems like you'll just have to keep envying my 'FOREVER' sports car."
"Pfft, big deal, I'll just have my brother get me one," Laura retorted before hanging up.
