Chapter 1232 You Really Care About Your Wife
When he was pissed, Michael called up Lucas. "Yo, Lucas, my dad's throwing a shindig tomorrow night at the Golden Leaf International Hotel. Got an invite for the Nelsons. Where you at?"
Lucas was caught off guard but quickly got the gist.
Carl had climbed up to the presidency, with James backing him up. James was throwing the party to celebrate and to get even cozier with the big shots in the business world.
"I'm out and about."
"Headed to the hospital? I was gonna take Laura for a prenatal checkup. I can give you the invite then," Michael said.
Around eleven in the morning, Michael took Laura to the hospital. It was his first time tagging along for a prenatal checkup, and it was a 4D ultrasound, which was supposed to show the baby's features pretty clearly. He wondered if the baby would look more like him or Laura.
As they got into the elevator, a big crowd suddenly piled in.
Seeing they were about to bump into Laura, Michael quickly shielded her and yelled at the crowd, "Hey, watch it! Pregnant lady here!"
A woman nearby noticed Michael's face and her eyes lit up. "Wow, you really care about your wife. She's lucky to have such a handsome hubby."
Laura, standing in the corner, couldn't help but smirk.
She looked up and saw Michael's sexy Adam's apple and collarbone. His hands were braced above her, like a mama bear protecting her cub.
A big crowd was pressing behind him, but Michael didn't budge an inch, making sure no one bumped into her.
In the packed elevator, she was actually pretty comfy.
Before, Caroline and bodyguards had always been with her, and while it wasn't bad, it always felt a bit off.
Having Michael with her when she was super pregnant made a world of difference.
Sure, even though she and Michael were in a contract marriage, the baby in her belly was still his.
When the elevator arrived, the crowd slowly dispersed, and the two of them were the last to get out.
Lucas was standing outside, wearing a white coat, mask, and glasses.
"What's with the mask? Kinda creepy," Michael remarked.
"Invitation, please." Lucas extended his hand.
Michael handed it over. "Joseph and Cassie are coming tomorrow. You should go with your dad and leave Sarah out. Sarah doesn't get along with Cassie and Laura."
Laura glanced at him, surprised.
She had to admit, his suggestion was spot on. She didn't want to see Sarah.
"I'm not bringing Sarah. I'm not marrying her," Lucas said coldly.
Laura was stunned, and Michael exclaimed, "What? Everyone thinks you two are getting hitched. Is Sarah cool with this?"
"She wants too much and meddles too much. My mind's made up," Lucas clearly didn't want to talk about it anymore. "Let's go. I'll take you to the obstetrics department."
On the way, they ran into Pablo, who nodded with a smile. "Mr. Nelson, is your mouth feeling better? Remember to apply the medicine today."
Lucas's tall frame stiffened, and Pablo walked away after greeting him.
Michael exclaimed, "Your mouth's hurt? No wonder you're wearing a mask. Lemme see."
He reached out to grab Lucas's arm, but Lucas snatched his wrist instead.
"What the hell, man? Let go. I'm just worried about you," Michael shouted.
Lucas's eyes behind the glasses darkened.
Laura's mouth twitched slightly, and she quickly pulled Michael away. "If he doesn't wanna show you, why do you care so much? Doesn't Mr. Nelson care about his image?"
Michael, who had been all eager to see the drama, got momentarily distracted by the soft, delicate hand holding his left hand.
Her hand was so small and slender, way smoother than his.
Just as he was about to grasp it, Laura quickly pulled her hand back.
Michael clicked his tongue in dissatisfaction while Lucas looked on speechlessly. Was it necessary to act like he'd never touched a woman before?
"Lucas, how'd you hurt your mouth?" Michael asked, jokingly, "Did a chick bite you?"
"None of your business. We're at the obstetrics department," Lucas said, stopping.
Michael followed Laura but was stopped by an intern at the door. "Men can't go in."
He had to stop, feeling frustrated.
After Laura went in, Lucas glanced at him and said, "You seem pretty attentive to her now."
"Well, we are married, and she's carrying my baby. I genuinely wanna settle down," Michael said earnestly.
"Have you moved on from Megan?" Lucas asked.
Michael's face stiffened, and after a moment of awkwardness, he said, "Megan isn't worth my concern. I wanna be responsible for my family now. I believe I can develop feelings for Laura. I used to only see Megan and couldn't appreciate other women. Now I realize Laura is pretty great."
"By the way, what happened to your mouth?" Michael asked suspiciously, "Was it really a chick who bit you?"
Lucas stayed silent.
Seeing him not respond, Michael got excited. "Sarah wouldn't dare. It must be Bernice."
"Wait here. I got work to do," Lucas said, turning to leave.
Michael wasn't ready to let it go and grabbed him. "Come on, spill the tea."
"Get lost. Don't mention her to me," Lucas said irritably, shaking him off and walking away with a dark expression.
Michael raised an eyebrow. It was the first time he'd seen Lucas so pissed over a woman. Interesting.
"Where's Mr. Nelson?" Laura suddenly came out, holding a medical record.
"He bailed," Michael said with a grin, "Guess who bit his mouth?"
Laura stayed silent.
"I bet it was Bernice," Michael said mischievously, "I never thought he'd have a day like this."
Laura immediately got it and chuckled. "Bernice's move is pretty effective. If anyone tries to force a kiss on me, I'll do the same."
Michael felt annoyed. He wished he hadn't told her.
"Go pay the bill." Laura handed him the medical card. "You can link it to your phone for payment."
"You should've linked it during your previous checkups," Michael said, not wanting to bother with the hassle of linking it to his phone.
Laura gave him a sarcastic smile, "I did link it, but if you wanna acknowledge the baby, you should at least be willing to pay the bill. Otherwise, what's the point of having you around?"
