Chapter 1402 The First Time She Called Him Husband While Sober

"This place is a total dump. You can't stay here alone; it's not safe. You gotta find somewhere else. Take this cash; it should last you a month."

Megan hesitated, "Can you help me find a place? I don't usually go out much, and the rental agencies always ask for ID."

Michael frowned. He had properties, but he’d already been upfront with Laura about them. She didn’t mind, but it’d be a hassle if she found out.

He thought for a sec and called Jonah. "Let Megan crash in one of your small apartments for a month. I’ll cover the rent."

"Getting cozy with Megan, huh?" Jonah teased.

"It’s not like that."

"Alright, no biggie. I’ll make sure no one knows. Worst case, I’ll say she’s one of my girls. Got plenty anyway, one more won’t hurt."

Jonah gave him an apartment address.

Michael then took Megan to Jonah’s place.

"Take the month off. Just stay here. If Joseph’s okay, I’ll send you abroad."

With that, he drove off.

When he got back to the villa, it was already 1 AM.

He quietly showered downstairs before heading up to bed.

Laura was already out cold.

He looked at her, thinking about the night’s events, feeling a bit uneasy.

The next morning, Laura woke up and asked, "What time did you get back last night? I didn’t even notice."

"Around one. You were sleeping like a baby," Michael said vaguely.

"You’re the one who sleeps like a baby," Laura playfully punched him. "What were you up to last night? You left so suddenly."

"Emergency at the company. Had to handle it, but it’s all good now." Michael quickly turned to play with Maeve to dodge more questions.

Laura eyed him for a bit, then lightly kicked him. "No gift today?"

Michael was caught off guard. "Oh, yeah, I got one. Came back too late last night and forgot it in the car. I’ll go get it now."

A few minutes later, he came back with a gift box.

Laura opened it to find a brand-new scarf from a high-end foreign luxury brand.

Perfect for the weather.

"Thanks, babe." She mustered the courage to give him a light kiss on the cheek.

Then, Laura felt super shy. It was the first time she’d called him that while sober.

Before, it was always in bed, and he’d made her say it a few times.

Didn’t feel anything then, but now she felt super shy.

Michael was pleasantly surprised. "Say it again."

"No way." Laura turned and walked away.

"Come on, babe." Michael pulled her into his arms.

Laura closed her eyes. She genuinely wanted to make this marriage work and live a good life.

Michael treated her well, and she could feel it. Plus, Michael was good-looking, fit, loaded, and a great cook. Being around him all the time, she couldn’t help but feel something.

Of course, she wasn’t in love with him yet.

"Michael, you don’t need to give me gifts every day. I like them, but I don’t need that much stuff. It’s kinda wasteful. Maybe once or twice a month instead."

"Okay." Michael nodded.

Honestly, giving gifts every day was fine for now. Money wasn’t an issue, but it was tough to keep coming up with different gifts all the time.

After breakfast, Laura drove Michael to the airport.

Secretary Magnus Callahan had been waiting there for a while.

As soon as Michael arrived, Magnus stepped up and grabbed his luggage.

After Laura took off, Magnus leaned in and whispered, "Mr. Jude, the estate owner’s been handled. He won’t spill about last night. He’s gonna be in prison for a bit, and when he gets out, he’ll leave Whisperlyn City quietly."

Michael nodded. "Did you figure out what went down?"

"He said he found Megan hot and had been watching her for a while. Noticed she wasn’t married, no boyfriend, and struggling, so he wanted to sleep with her. He hinted a few times, but she didn’t bite, so he tried to force her last night."

"Scumbag." Michael’s eyes flashed with anger.

Magnus hesitated, "Mr. Jude, you’ve got a wife. Maybe it’s best to stay out of Megan’s mess."

"Don’t sweat it. It’s just for this month, and I won’t get too involved. As long as she stays at Jonah’s and keeps low, it’ll be fine." Michael cut him off.

Magnus felt relieved, seeing Michael had it under control.

Magnus had been with Michael for six or seven years. When Michael cut ties with the Jude Family, it was rough, and Magnus, as his secretary, had a tough time too. He genuinely hoped Michael wouldn’t get tangled up with Megan again.

Emerald Lakeside was a booming coastal tourist city.

It used to be a small town, but thanks to its prime location, it blew up in recent years. With national policy backing, tons of real estate developers and entrepreneurs flocked to invest and develop in Emerald Lakeside. In just a few years, it turned into a big city.

After landing in Emerald Lakeside, Michael first checked out a factory, then had dinner with some local bigwigs, signed an investment deal, and got invited to a banquet that evening.

"Michael, I know you’re a big deal, but it’s good to meet more top dogs. Everyone here tonight is a major player in Emerald Lakeside. See that guy in the black suit? He runs a car manufacturing biz. Last year, he set up a car factory here, and I heard he’s diving into new energy vehicles this year. You might wanna chat with him; there could be some collab potential." The guy who brought Michael smiled, introducing the crowd. "And that man in the suit is the owner of Apex Innovations Group
. Last year, he invested five billion dollars in Emerald Lakeside."

Michael nodded.

But before he could make a move, a bunch of people came up to greet him.

Even though it was Michael’s first time in Emerald Lakeside, word about the Jude Family’s investment plans had already spread.

The Jude Family was a big deal in Madison now.

"Michael, I’ve heard so much about you. Didn’t expect you to be so good-looking," a businessman joked.

"Not at all. I was just about to come over and say hi. After all, I’m the newbie here."

Michael chatted with the various businessmen.

After finally wrapping up a convo with one guy, Michael took a sip of red wine when he suddenly heard a voice behind him.

"Michael, we meet again. What a coincidence."

Michael turned around and froze.

He hadn’t expected to run into Jacob here.

Michael had a serious grudge against Jacob.

His face immediately darkened.
