Chapter 1206 How Have You Been?
"You don't need to feel sorry. Maybe we all have our fates," Laura said, holding her belly. "Look at me, I'm the goddaughter of the future president and Michael's wife, but he doesn't love me."
Benjamin's eyes widened. "Laura, are you okay?"
"Do you know how I became the Jude family's goddaughter?" Laura asked. "At the Ocean Blue group's product launch, Nathan spiked my drink, and Michael was drunk. We ended up having sex by accident. The Jude family didn't want Michael to marry Megan, so they made a big deal out of it, trying to make him take responsibility. They even swapped my birth control pills. Michael refused to marry me, and I got pregnant without knowing. Later, the Judes said if I didn't have the baby, they'd go after the Miller Group. If I agreed, Carl would recognize me as his goddaughter. I had no choice."
"The Jude family is awful," Benjamin said, shocked by her story.
"Awful?" Laura gave a bitter smile. "Who wouldn't envy the president's goddaughter?"
"But I know this isn't what you want," Benjamin said softly. "So why did you marry Michael?"
"Because Megan left Michael, and because you released that video," Laura replied. "Wouldn't it look better if a husband defended his pregnant wife?"
Benjamin's face turned pale. His actions had pushed Laura to marry Michael.
"Benjamin, I didn't bully Isla that day. She wouldn't leave me alone. When you came over, you thought I was bullying her and hit me without a word," Laura said, covering her cheek with a sorrowful smile.
"Laura, I'm sorry. Because you hit Isla four years ago, I thought it was you," Benjamin said, flustered.
"I hit her four years ago because she and Olivia framed Cassie. I explained it to you back then, but you didn't believe me. You might not believe me now either, but let me ask you, who saved you this time?" Laura asked.
Benjamin was stunned. "It was Isla. She said she knew a friend from before, and I recently found out that friend knew people in the president's office."
"If I'm not mistaken, that person is Olivia," Laura said. "We could have caught Olivia back then, but she had plastic surgery. Do you remember when I went to the hospital four years ago, and you ran into me? I was doing a paternity test for Olivia and Robert, but someone tipped her off, and she escaped early, even killing a friend of mine. That's why I was so angry when I went to your company to find Isla."
Benjamin listened, growing more confused. He knew Olivia was bad, but how could she be involved with Isla? "Laura, is there a misunderstanding? Isla doesn't know Olivia, and how could Olivia have the power to get me out?"
"Olivia isn't the same as before. I suspect she's back for revenge on me and Cassie. You don't have to believe me, but keep an eye on Isla, and you'll find out," Laura said softly. "I won't say more, so you don't think I'm trying to cause trouble. Figure it out yourself."
Benjamin couldn't believe it, but seeing her like this, he couldn't argue. "Laura, did you come to me just for this?"
"I won't bother Isla anymore, but if she gets too close to Olivia, it means going against the Hernandez Group. The Hernandez Group is tight with the Jude family, so that means going against them too. You've already made one mistake; don't make another. Olivia can help you for a bit, but she can't take down the Jude family. Once she's gone and the Jude family starts settling scores, it won't be easy." Laura shrugged. "If you don't believe me, there's nothing I can do. Did you know Bryan and Abigail were running around for you when you were detained?"
Benjamin felt a lump in his throat.
He opened the car door, got out, and looked at her deeply. "Laura, are you okay?"
"What do you think?" Laura asked, then added with a sad tone, "If there had been no Isla between us, we might have been married by now."
Benjamin felt a pang in his heart.
Even after the car left, he couldn't shake it off.
He thought, 'If I had gone abroad to find Laura back then, how great it would be. Suppose it weren't for what Isla said... Wait! Isla?'
For the first time, Benjamin seriously thought about the past.
If it weren't for Isla's instigation at the police station that day, he wouldn't have gone crazy to collaborate with Carl's competitors.
Just like Laura said, if there had been no Isla between them, they might have been married by now, even with kids, instead of ending up like this.
Benjamin thought it would have been great if he had kept his distance from Isla when he was dating Laura.
Back at the company, Benjamin hesitated at his office door, then went directly to find Isla but didn't see her.
He remembered Laura's warning, opened her drawer, and found a fancy gift box with a bow, clearly meant for someone.
He looked at the brand on the box; it seemed very expensive, a bottle of perfume costing over a hundred thousand dollars.
"Benjamin." Isla suddenly came in and was stunned to see what he was holding.
"I was looking for a document and found this," Benjamin quickly responded. "A gift for someone?"
"Yes, a friend who saved you last time. I owe her a favor, so I bought this gift." Isla said, taking his arm.
"A favor should be repaid. How about we invite your friend to dinner sometime?" Benjamin suggested.
"That's not necessary. She's quite busy and has a special status. It's already rare for her to agree to save you." Isla smiled. "By the way, I want to leave work early this afternoon to deliver this gift."
"Okay, go ahead." Benjamin nodded.
In the afternoon, after Isla arranged a meeting place with Olivia, she drove away from the company.
She didn't notice a taxi following her, with Benjamin inside.
Benjamin didn't drive his car because he thought taking a taxi would be less noticeable.
