Chapter 361
Cassie gave a wry smile.
"So this is how you see me, Dad. Did you ever really love me? Let me tell you the truth: Joseph and I have known each other for a while. He's been the one pursuing me relentlessly. My company and even David have been suffering under his oppression - all his doing. Do you think I want to live a life without dignity? To be condemned and called vile names?"
As she spoke these words, she finally started sobbing.
Leo sat, stunned into silence. "What? Why didn't you tell me this sooner?"
"Would it have made any difference?" She said with a hint of scorn. "You can't even protect me in your own home, let alone stand up to Joseph for me."
Leo Chapman's face showed a messy look as if he had aged several years in an instant.
"I'm the failure here, bringing you to New York only to have you constantly pushed around. I'll go have a word with Joseph; he's gone too far."
"No need to come looking for me; I'm already here."
The door to the restaurant swung open violently, and the tall figure of Joseph strode in, his handsome face as calm as a guest arriving fashionably late.
"Joseph, what are you doing here?" Cassie stood up, fuming. "You were following me!"
"I wasn't following you; I just came to see Dad with you."
Joseph pulled out a chair next to her and sat down, his shameless demeanor igniting Leo's fury. "Who's your dad? You're seeing Cassie behind Luna's back and pressuring her at the same time. I will never hand my daughter over to a despicable man like you."
"The resolve I have for Cassie should have been clear to you the other night."
Joseph placed his hand over Cassie's, his gaze deep and tender. "I want to marry her."
Those words took Cassie by surprise.
She turned to him, disbelief in her eyes. Was he really proposing to her?
Were the things Lucas said true?
"Impossible!" Leo slammed his hand on the table. "If you want to marry her, why did you lead Luna on in the first place? You've made everyone in Madison believe Luna was your girlfriend, only to turn around and marry Cassie. Have you thought about what people will say about her?"
"There was a misunderstanding."
"I don't care about that." Leo waved his hand dismissively. "To love someone is to respect and cherish them, not to hurt them."
Joseph's brow twitched slightly. "You failed Isabella once, marrying another woman shortly after she became pregnant. You've been a failure in the path of love."
Leo's face turned pale. "Yes, and that's precisely why I need to protect Cassie more."
"Protect?" Joseph lifted an empty coffee cup from the table. "Where were you when Vera and her daughter assaulted Cassie? If you had been protecting her last night, would she have been harmed by your wife and daughter?"
Leo's face turned pale.
Cassie also fell silent, her gaze downward.
Indeed, Leo had never been able to protect her.
"See, you don't know anything. You can't protect her. You wouldn't even dare to confront your own family for her. That's why you wronged Isabella in the past."
Joseph's look was piercing. "I'm different from you. I'll have her, even if I can't be the president of the Hernandez group, even if every member of the Hernandez family stands against it. I will marry her."
