Chapter 1735 Just let Bernice go.
The next day, Lucas couldn't stand it anymore and broke up with Nina.
Because he found Nina disgusting.
On the day they broke up, he said, "Nina, you didn't think I liked you, did you? Women like you are a dime a dozen in Whisperlyn City. At first, I just wanted to try something new. Playing with you got boring after a while."
"Stop clinging to me. Your mom's a cheater, and I can't be with a cheater's daughter. Besides, I never intended to find a wife. You were just a fling."
"Honestly, I regret sleeping with you. It was pointless."
"Are you out of your mind? You believed a guy sweet-talking you into bed? Don't tell me it was your first time with me. With how little self-respect you have, who knows if your virginity wasn't restored later?"
He remembered all those cruel words.
Lucas suddenly wanted a cigarette.
He fished a pack out of his pocket, put one in his mouth, lit it, and asked, "That time she went into the hotel with that guy named Kimball, was that your doing too?"
"Yeah, you thought she betrayed you, but I set her up. That diary just made you think she had a crush on some guy named Kimball. Kimball was poor, so I gave him some money to set up Nina. Nina did have a good relationship with Kimball, but she just felt sorry for him because he was poor and worked hard. She helped him out occasionally. That time, Nina was drunk, and Kimball took her to the hotel but did nothing. When Nina woke up, she didn't know and even thanked Kimball for taking her to the hotel."
Megan suddenly laughed, her gaunt face looking particularly sinister. "Nina probably never understood why you suddenly hated her so much and broke up with her. She didn't know that the classmate she thought was kind had sold her out for money."
Lucas took a slow drag on his cigarette.
Some things you don't know until you ask.
Turns out, he and Nina had been living in Megan's web of lies.
Before he dated Nina, he wasn't new to relationships, but he never took them lightly.
But Megan ruined everything.
What did he leave Nina with? His harsh insults and trampling.
Even later, when she said she was innocent, that she didn't kill anyone, she begged him, hoping he'd consider their past.
He chose to ignore her. He chose to help Megan find the best lawyer to send Nina to prison, where she eventually died.
When he found out Nina was wronged, he didn't feel like he does now.
He thought her being wronged was one thing, but her being promiscuous was another.
Now he realized he was completely wrong.
Megan kept watching Lucas, seeing him finish his cigarette before laughing like a madwoman. "Lucas, I knew from the start that Nina didn't kill anyone. She wasn't the type. But I said it anyway. I wanted the person she loved most to send her to prison. Why did my dad like her so much? Why did he want to give her everything? I wanted her to live a life worse than death."
Lucas stood up, cold as ice.
He stared at Megan with a chilling gaze.
"Are you angry?" Megan went crazy. "What's the use of being angry? Nina's dead. She'll never know. Don't worry, when I get to hell, I'll explain everything to her. But whether she'll forgive you, I don't know."
"Lucas, I'm dying, but even in death, I won't let you be happy."
"I didn't know before, but now that you're asking about Nina, it means you care about her a bit."
"What a pity, what a shame."
"To think I could toy with you three golden boys like this, my life was worth it."
Lucas dropped the phone and walked away.
Maybe he shouldn't have come today.
If he hadn't come to ask, to investigate, some answers would have stayed buried in time.
But after hesitating for months, he came.
He sat in his car, smoking one cigarette after another, then laughed.
He punched the steering wheel hard.
Finally, he threw away his cigarettes and glasses.
Lucas sat in the car, expressionless, for two whole hours.
Then he drove to the cemetery.
He took flowers to Nina's grave.
It was called Nina's grave, but it didn't even have her ashes. Cassie and Laura had set it up with Nina's belongings.
He looked at the photo on the tombstone. Nina's beautiful, cold face seemed to gaze at him, her lips slightly curved.
Just like when they first met, Nina's eyes were pure.
She softly said, "Mr. Nelson, thank you for saving me."
Lucas placed the flowers in front of the tombstone, squatted down, and quietly looked at her until his eyes turned red.
"Nina, I'm sorry."
Sorry, if there's a next life, don't meet me again, and don't meet Megan.
In this life, his heart was already cold, but he knew he could never repay what he owed Nina.
Night.
Digital Dive Bar.
When Joseph arrived, Lucas was sitting at the bar, drinking and watching a group of young people dancing on stage.
Lucas leaned against the bar, his shirt unbuttoned a few notches, holding a beer bottle in his left hand. His usually refined and handsome face showed a rare hint of desolation.
This made him even more attractive to women.
Lucas, in this state, was enough to make any woman breathless with desire.
But the bar owner had warned everyone not to approach Lucas.
"I heard you went to see Megan today?" Joseph was surprised. He didn't expect Lucas to go see Megan. He had a feeling Lucas's unusual behavior today had something to do with Megan.
"Yes." Lucas opened a can and tossed a beer to him.
"What did she say?"
"Nothing." Lucas paused, then denied it.
Some things, Joseph and the others didn't know from the start, and Lucas saw no need to tell them now.
"I guess it has to do with Nina," Joseph suddenly said.
Lucas glanced at him and took a swig from his bottle.
"If you feel guilty about Nina, you should let Bernice go," Joseph said. "Cassie has complained to me many times. Bernice may be in the entertainment industry, but she's not looking to rely on a sugar daddy. Besides, you've been with her for a while. Isn't that enough?"
