Chapter 291

"Joseph's expression was calm as he pulled a set of keys from his pocket and tossed them to her. ""Here, you'll be at my beck and call from now on.""

Cassie's face turned red. ""Aren't you worried Luna will find out?""

""So what? It doesn’t matter. Every guy’s got a girl. Worst-case scenario,” he shrugged and said, ""I'll find another Vivian. There are plenty of smart folks itching to get in the game.""

Joseph had barely finished his sentence when the doorbell rang.

He opened the door to find Walter standing there with a shopping bag. ""Joseph, I've got the clothes you asked me to buy. Oh, and you have a company meeting at nine.""

Joseph hummed a response, tossing the clothes into Cassie's arms. ""Go upstairs and change.""

After a shower and changing into the new clothes, Cassie came downstairs to find Joseph gone.

She checked her phone and saw texts and missed calls from Leo and David but none from Laura Miller. Worry pinched her brow as she dialed back. Laura's groggy voice came through almost immediately. ""Cassie? What's up?""

""How can you ask that? Are you okay?"" Cassie was baffled.

""I... Yeah, I'm fine,"" Laura mumbled, rubbing her head. ""I went to deliver some documents last night, ended up drinking too much, and passed out. Lucky for me, some folks from the office got me home. I won't be repeating that mistake.""

Cassie understood then; the previous night's events had been orchestrated by Michael, and Laura was still in the dark.

She decided to keep quiet—there was no need to stir up Laura's temper at the office. Michael was untouchable for them, and now that Joseph had leverage over her, he probably wouldn't go after her friend.

""Just be more careful next time. Don't get drunk out there, especially when you're alone.""

""I will. But it's odd,"" Laura quipped, ""I usually hold my liquor well. Last night, a few drinks did me in—must've been top-shelf stuff.""

Cassie's smile was tinged with bitterness. Likely, there had been something in that drink.

After leaving Joseph's place, she headed straight for the Peace Group's New York branch.

After spending the day investigating the New York market, it became clear that Peace Group was doing well in Madison and other second-tier cities, but they needed help in the Big Apple.

""Real estate here in New York is prohibitively expensive, not to mention hard to acquire,"" the general manager explained. ""And even with enough money, what counts here is connections. The city's elite have their hands in property development.""

Cassie nodded. ""We'll have to secure a prime lot. We need a solid foundation to establish our presence in New York.""
""The coastline over there has a patch that all of New York is expanding towards right now; it's just tough to get a hold of,"" the general manager said as he unfolded the map for her to see.

Cassie made a mental note and called Leo in the evening to see if he could pull some strings.

After all, having a father at hand and not seeking his help would be foolish.

There was a brief pause on the line before Leo answered, ""It's a small matter; I'll make a call to the relevant departments.""

""Thanks, Dad.""
