Chapter 1231 Dating With Me
"So, am I just gonna be Sarah's puppet forever?" Lucas's voice was chillier than a winter breeze. "I told her, play nice and she gets to be Mrs. Nelson. But nah, she wants the whole damn package. Today it's marriage, tomorrow it's kids, and the day after, she wants my undying love. Sorry, I'd rather bleed Sarah dry than be her puppet."
He slammed the phone down.
But Yancy's call still messed with his head.
He dialed Max. "Cancel all of Sarah's gigs."
Max was taken aback. "What are you up to?"
"Some chicks need a reality check." Lucas hung up and drove straight to Bernice's place, banging on the door for ages, but no one answered.
He whipped out his phone and called Fiona, Bernice's agent. "Where'd Bernice go after she got out?"
Fiona was caught off guard. She'd heard about Lucas and Bernice's drama but didn't expect to get dragged into it. "She got out? I have no clue."
"Seriously? You're her agent!" Lucas's voice was ice-cold.
"I'll call her and find out," Fiona stammered.
Three minutes later, instead of Fiona, an unknown number popped up.
He picked up, and Bernice's cool voice came through. "Don't bug Fiona. I'm not in Whisperlyn City. Went back home with my mom to recover."
"Bernice, you're hurt bad and still running around? Trying to wreck your health?" Lucas's tone was bossy. "If you don't want me to bug Fiona, get back here now."
"Come back to get knocked out by you again?" Bernice scoffed. "Mr. Nelson, I've been resting for over a week. I don't have time to waste. I need to heal up and get back to work."
Lucas rubbed his temples. "Bernice, if you hadn't pushed my buttons last night and even bit me, I wouldn't have shoved you. You're hurt, but I got hurt too. Come back and see what you did to my lip."
"Isn't that just perfect? You can take a break from your beauty addiction and not wear yourself out." Bernice's tone was still icy.
Lucas frowned. If Bernice were here, he'd probably want to shake some sense into her.
"Bernice, why do you hate me so much?" he suddenly asked.
Bernice gripped her phone tight. She couldn't tell him she was Nina, and that's why she hated him. "I hate guys like you who are about to get hitched but still mess around. I told you, play all you want, but find women who are cool with being side chicks."
"You hate me because of what Gary did to you, right?" Lucas felt a wave of anger. "You care about him that much."
"I don't care about him anymore, but the hurt I went through is a lesson. It reminds me not to screw up again." Bernice paused, thinking about her fierce attitude last night. She was pretty scared of Lucas's revenge, so she softened her tone. "Mr. Nelson, I'm sorry about last night, but it's best if we keep our distance from now on."
"I get it. You don't wanna be a side chick. Bernice, I've decided to call off my engagement with Sarah. How about you and me give this romance thing a shot?" Lucas couldn't believe the words coming out of his mouth.
But after the shock, he felt a weird sense of relief.
Turns out, he really didn't wanna marry Sarah.
He wasn't sure if he was into Bernice for real, but suddenly he wanted to give it a go.
Maybe he could learn to date like a normal dude, like Joseph and Michael.
On the other end, Bernice was floored.
Lucas wasn't the type to BS. If he said he'd dump Sarah, he meant it.
A bitter smile crept onto her lips.
When they were younger, he said the same thing.
She believed him, gave him her best years, and he ditched her without a second thought.
Now, he was saying the same thing again. Even though she was still the same person inside, everything else had changed.
No way she was gonna fall for it again.
"So, you in?" Lucas grinned, thinking she must be over the moon.
"I don't want to," Bernice shot back, "If you dump Sarah and start dating me, what'll people think? They'll call me a gold-digging mistress. The entertainment biz hates that. I wanna focus on my career."
Lucas's handsome face turned frosty. "We don't have to go public right away. Besides, with me backing you, who'd dare talk smack?"
"Mr. Nelson, you're sweet-talking now 'cause you're chasing me. But what happens when you get bored? Will you still have my back? When Gary was after me, his lines were even smoother than yours. I've worked my butt off to get here and learned that focusing on my career is way more rewarding than dating. Money in hand is the real deal."
Bernice's conviction left Lucas feeling cornered. "Bernice, don't be ungrateful. If you turn me down again, I'll make sure you can't have a career."
"If I can't make it in showbiz, I'll find something else. I'm not just an actress," Bernice said casually. She really didn't care if she had to switch careers. After all, she graduated from a top university and managed a publicly traded company. Starting a business wasn't that hard.
Lucas was taken aback by her confidence. "You're just a regular college grad. Aren't you overestimating yourself?"
Bernice replied, "Maybe I'm just too naive 'cause I'm a regular college grad."
Lucas sneered. "I get it. You don't wanna date me at all."
"I told you, you're not my type," Bernice said innocently.
"Fine, Bernice." Lucas finally hung up. After hanging up, he furiously kicked her apartment door a few times.
The neighbor across the hall saw him and quickly ducked into the elevator, scared out of their wits. He looked sharp, but his temper was terrifying.
After stepping out of the elevator, Lucas chuckled to himself.
In his thirty-something years, it was the first time he'd been seriously turned down while looking for a girlfriend.
Bernice, he remembered her.
If he couldn't have Bernice, he wouldn't be a Nelson.
