Chapter 581

The concept was almost beyond Cassie's comprehension. She shot Nathaniel a piercing look, her voice laced with disbelief. "Did Laura's case truly make it to the headlines?"

Nathaniel seemed to grapple with his words, but eventually, he bowed his head, a bitter taste lingering on his tongue. "Yes," he admitted.

"But why?" Cassie's voice rose in frustration. "Why is she the victim, yet those on the outside accuse her of seducing Nathan?" She couldn't contain her anger any longer, her words echoing sharply in the room. "Laura is the victim here! Don't these media outlets have any sense of decency?"

"I... I'm sorry," Nathaniel stammered, his voice laced with helplessness. "I don't know how this information leaked to the press. After the incident, the media interviewed Nathan. He claimed that Laura was the instigator. Since Laura didn't dispute his claims, everyone assumed her silence was an admission of guilt."

"Hand me your phone. I need to see the news for myself," Cassie demanded, reaching for his device.

A nearby bodyguard swiftly intervened, pulling her back. " Cassie, you need to go in for your check-up."

"I don't want to," she protested, her voice echoing with desperation. "I need to get in touch with Laura."

Despite her pleas, the bodyguards remained unmoved, escorting her forcefully into the ultrasound room. Her protests fell on deaf ears, ignored by all.

Once the examination concluded, she was escorted back to the cold, desolate top floor. In a fit of rage, she wreaked havoc in the room, startling the newly arrived nanny.

It wasn't until dusk that Joseph finally made his appearance. He surveyed the chaos in the room, but before he could react, a knife was thrust towards him.

Joseph evaded the attack, seizing Cassie's wrist, disarming her, and discarding the knife. He turned to face her, his icy gaze fixed on the disheveled woman before him. "You want to kill me?"

"I was wrong," Cassie spat out, her voice filled with contempt. "I'd rather you were a fool than the monster you've become. Why do you deserve to live? A lunatic like you should have been locked away from the start. I deluded myself into thinking I could cure you. Am I the mad one?"

"Enough," Joseph retorted, dragging Cassie into the bathroom. He forced her to look at her reflection in the mirror. "Look at yourself. How are you any different from a madwoman?"

"I am going mad. You've driven me to it," Cassie cried, tears streaming down her face. "Joseph, why did you do this to my friend? You knew Laura was the victim. You saved Nathan only to tarnish Laura's reputation once he was free. Is a woman's reputation of no value to you? Are all women, except Megan, meaningless to you?"

Joseph's temple throbbed, veins bulging. "Have you finished? The reporters weren't entirely wrong. Your friend was the one who seduced Nathan."

"What did you say?" Cassie's eyes widened, as if she had heard an absurd tale. "Laura was the one who added Nathan on Facebook first, using various methods to seduce him. But after succeeding, she realized his reputation was tarnished and wanted to back out. There's no such thing as an easy deal in this world."

"Who told you all this, Megan? Do you believe everything she says?"

Joseph sneered, his voice dripping with disdain. "Why wouldn’t I believe Megan? You and Laura are cut from the same cloth. Birds of a feather flock together. The Miller family may hold some sway in Madison, but in New York, they're insignificant. Of course, she'd want to climb the social ladder with Nathan."

Cassie's face remained pure and innocent, as if made of transparent glass. She stared at Joseph's thin lips, lips she had kissed countless times. It was then that Cassie remembered a cruel truth - men with thin lips were often heartless and cold.
