Chapter 316
"Liam paused for a moment, his expression changing subtly. ""I didn't expect Miss Brooks to be engaged already.""
Cassie responded with a soft ""hmm,"" adding, ""I owe you one for that day, Liam.""
""Don't mention it. Your driving skills were quite dazzling,"" he replied with a wink. ""We should have a driving challenge sometime.""
""You've got driving skills?"" David asked with a hint of surprise.
""Yeah, I guess it was about going above and beyond to stay alive,"" Cassie said with a wry smile and a shrug.
After chatting for a while, Liam excused himself and left.
The room fell silent, and a complex look crossed David's face. ""Cassie, do you ever regret our engagement back in Madison?""
""Why are you asking that question?"" Cassie asked, puzzled.
Looking at her with a bittersweet expression, David confessed, ""I've had a pretty smooth ride until I got to New York, but I just realized how insignificant I am. Liam is one in a million. Suddenly, I feel I might not be good enough for you.""
Cassie grinned. ""Then you're giving me too much credit. Even though I’ve returned to the Chapman family, I'm still an illegitimate daughter. No prominent family would ever accept their son marrying me.""
""That's because they're too shallow to see your worth,"" David said softly, brushing a strand of her hair behind her ear.
Cassie instinctively wanted to pull away, but in the end, she resisted the urge.
...
By the third day, Vera and her daughter arrived at the hospital, fuming with anger.
""Leo, what's the meaning of this? Why won't you let us through the gates of the Chapman estate?"" Vera entered, bursting into tears. ""You're even keeping your daughter out. Is it that you only want Cassie now?""
""Dad, have you written me off?"" Luna cried out, heartbroken.
Leo felt a pang of bitterness in his heart. ""In a while...""
""Dad."" Cassie's voice stopped him.
Immediately, Leo fell silent.
""Cassie, are you forcing Dad to keep me away from home?"" Luna turned her anger toward Cassie. ""That's my home! I've lived there for twenty years.""
""Miss Brooks, I was wrong!"" Vera suddenly fell to her knees. ""I won't dare to do it again. Please don't let your dad kick us out. Luna and I, we can't be without him.""
Leo saw Vera in such a humble state for the first time. His heart was full of complex emotions. After all, they had been husband and wife for many years, and she was the mother of his child. As he was about to help Vera up, his phone rang.
He immediately stepped aside to answer the call. After hearing the report on the other end, he felt a tumultuous rush in his chest.
After ending the call, he stormed over and kicked Vera, sending her sprawling to the ground. ""You vile woman! I thought the worst you had ever done was to try to ruin Cassie's reputation. How dare the Jaydens plot to kill her?""
Vera lay on the ground, stunned, while Luna, frozen with fear, barely managed to speak. ""Dad, have you lost your mind? How could you hit Mom?""
""Leo, you kicked me? You kicked me?!"" Vera's eyes welled up with anger and disbelief.
""You deserve much more than just a kick. I want a divorce,” Leo declared, with fury on his face. ""I've already hired a gardener for the estate; it was Xavier who paid him to tamper with Cassie's car brakes, hoping she'd die in a crash. Xavier's been close to Clark. Who else would pull off such a heinous deed except the Jaydens?""
Vera clutched his hand, tears of innocence streaming down her face. ""How can you destroy our decades of marriage over one man's accusation? Who knows who she might have wronged outside?""
""Enough with the act. From the moment she came to New York, you couldn't stand the sight of her; it was you scheming against her. This marriage is over."" Leo pushed her away and called security. Vera was dragged out of the hospital, and Luna was promptly escorted back to the Chapman estate by a bodyguard.
In the hospital room, Leo let out a bitter laugh. ""Now I realize what kind of evil creature I've lived with all these years. Terrifying.""
