Chapter 948 Joseph Can No Longer Threaten Us

"No," she said loudly.

Cassie was startled by the look in his eyes; she had rarely seen David look at her this way.

"I'm sorry I scared you." David realized he had been too impulsive and immediately held her tightly again, his voice filled with pain. "Cassie, I don't want to be like this. This past month has been very hard for me. I often regret my uselessness, letting Joseph take you away. I also regret that you were with Joseph every day. Would you fall in love with him again and then divorce me?"

The more Cassie listened, the more guilty and heartbroken she felt. "No, David, I should be the one to say sorry, I..."

Thinking about how she had been sleeping with Joseph every day, she felt deeply ashamed and unworthy of seeing David.

Especially on the night of their wedding, Cassie had even slept with Joseph. The more she thought about it, the paler her face became, and she couldn't continue speaking.

"Don't say any more. Let's leave here first. Your father is very worried about you," he interrupted.

David held her as they walked towards the plane outside.

Even after boarding the plane, Cassie was still in a daze. David had indeed rescued her, but it was too late; she couldn't pretend that nothing had happened.

"David, can you tell me what happened outside? How did you find this place, and where exactly am I now?" she asked, bewildered.

"This is a small island in the Pacific Ocean, a private island Joseph bought abroad. The island's registration isn't under his name so that we couldn't find it. I managed to find it because I reported to the police that he had kidnapped my wife," David patiently explained, "Cassie, I actually wanted to call the police a long time ago. Still, when Joseph took you, he threatened me, saying that if I dared to call the police, he would ruin my family. I couldn't just think about myself; I had to think about my parents."

Cassie gasped and then scolded, "I didn't expect Joseph to be so cruel, to threaten you with your family."

"Yes." David's eyes flashed, and he said in a low voice, "Otherwise, I would have called the police long ago."

"Then why did you call the police now? Aren't you afraid of him anymore?" Cassie asked, puzzled. "Last time I heard Joseph say the Hernandez family chip was about to be launched. It's supposed to be the world's top chip, and his status would surely..."

"The Hernandez family chip launch failed," David interrupted her. "I heard that the Lundrigans Group abroad launched a more advanced chip first, catching the Hernandez family off guard. Their stock has been plummeting for the past two days, and their market value has shrunk by over forty billion."

Cassie was stunned. Forty billion. No wonder Joseph had left in such a hurry.

"How could it have fallen so badly?" she asked.

"Because the Hernandez family had previously claimed that their Purple Chip was the world's top chip, attracting many large companies at home and abroad to place high deposits. But after the Lundrigans Group's chip came out, those companies felt deceived. Moreover, the Hernandez family indeed caused significant losses to those partner companies. According to the contracts, the Hernandez family has to pay astronomical compensation, which could lead to their bankruptcy," he explained.

Cassie was utterly shocked. All along, Joseph had seemed like a god standing atop a pyramid in her mind. She hadn't expected the Hernandez family to fall so suddenly, catching everyone off guard.

But others didn't understand; she knew Joseph somewhat. Joseph was never one to boast, and with Dragon's people working abroad for years, it was impossible they hadn't discovered that the Lundrigans Group was also close to developing a top-tier chip.

She felt there was something strange about this; Joseph's failure was too sudden as if someone was deliberately targeting the Hernandez family.

"Then... the Hernandez family is probably no longer the top family in Madison, right?" she couldn't help but ask softly.

"Yes, now the Hernandez family's market value is even lower than my company's," David said, "And we don't know what will happen tomorrow. If Joseph doesn't compensate those companies, the Hernandez family's reputation will plummet, and no company will dare to cooperate with them in the future. If they do compensate, the Hernandez family might become a bottom-tier company, and they won't have the money to invest in labs to develop new chips. Without new chips, the Hernandez family will be eliminated from the market."

Cassie understood.

In short, Joseph had walked into a dead end this time. The top family in Silverwood was about to disappear into the annals of history.

"Cassie, Joseph can no longer threaten us." David suddenly reached out and held her tightly, "And I won't easily let go of the grudge of him taking my wife."

Cassie looked up and saw the hatred in his eyes, feeling a chill in her heart. "David..."

"Cassie, don't you want me to take revenge?" David looked at her complexly. "As a man, my wife was taken away in public at our wedding. I can't pretend nothing happened. Besides, you've been locked up on that island for days, surely suffering a lot. Now it's time for revenge."

Cassie's eyelashes drooped slightly. It was normal for David to have this thought; any man would harbor such hatred.

Even yesterday, she had hated Joseph immensely, even cursing him to lose everything.

But now that this day had truly come, she didn't feel as happy as she thought she would. It seemed... actually... she didn't want to take revenge on Joseph that much.

But how could this be?

Had she become numb to Joseph's torment? Did she have a masochistic tendency?

Cassie shivered, feeling utterly unwell.

"David, what do you plan to do?" she murmured.

"Of course, to go back and accuse him of kidnapping," David said in a low voice. "You were the one kidnapped. As long as you tell the police that he kept you locked up and restricted your freedom and... harmed you, he will be sentenced."

Harmed?

Cassie was startled, her face burning with embarrassment.

After a long while, she managed to squeeze out her voice. "David, what kind of harm are you talking about?"

A trace of pain flashed in David's dark eyes.

After a moment, he smiled bitterly. "Cassie, we're both adults. You were taken away for a long period. Frankly, I don't believe Joseph didn't touch you. But you are my wife. As long as it was non-consensual, his actions are criminal."

Cassie couldn't lift her head in embarrassment.

After a half-minute of silence, Cassie removed his hand, stepped out of his embrace, and walked to the plane's window. She needed time to process this.

"Cassie, since I came to find you, I won't hold those things against you," David said passionately behind her. "I know you were forced, and it's my fault for being useless. If I had come earlier, you wouldn't have gone through this. But you have to admit, Joseph was too arrogant. He should be punished for his evil deeds."
