Chapter 1553 He Just Made a Mistake

"Cassie, I get what you're trying to do. You want me to spill the beans to Michael so he feels bad for misunderstanding Laura. Once he feels guilty, he'll start treating Megan differently, making it easier for Megan to mess up their marriage, right?"

Bernice said softly. "Honestly, even if you hadn't told me, I was already planning to tell Michael the truth. Laura doesn't deserve to be seen as the bad guy. I'm just worried he might start bothering Laura again."

Cassie scoffed, "He threw a huge wedding for Megan. What right does he have to go after Laura? I want him to regret it. The more he regrets, the more he'll hate Megan when he sees her true colors."

Bernice pictured the scene and couldn't help but admire Cassie. "Cassie, Laura's lucky to have a friend like you."

Cassie grinned, "You're my friend too."

Cassie felt a bit sad. Unfortunately, Lucas wasn't like Michael. They were total opposites—one was too cold and distant, the other too emotional. So her little tricks wouldn't work on Lucas.

That evening, Laura went to the Jude Estate.

Carl and Violet had already brought Maeve there. When she arrived, Caroline was holding Maeve and laughing. But it was clear Maeve was more comfortable with Violet. After a while in Caroline's arms, Maeve started crying.

Caroline had no choice but to hand her granddaughter over to Violet.

That was how kids were; they got close to whoever they saw more often.

Violet looked down, and the previously crying Maeve miraculously smiled in her arms. Her heart instantly melted, along with a small sense of pride.

After all, Maeve was super cute and pretty, with rosy skin, getting more adorable by the day.

Violet, in her forties, also loved kids. Seeing Maeve often, she basically treated her like her own granddaughter.

In Maeve's mind, Violet was closer than Caroline.

Caroline watched from the side, feeling super envious. "Violet, you really love kids. You should push Derek to step up this year. Didn't you say he and Blair were planning to get married this year? It's time to start planning their wedding."

At these words, Laura, standing nearby, stiffened a bit.

Violet's smile faded, and Carl snorted, "Don't even mention Derek. He broke up with Blair behind our backs before Christmas. I was so mad I slapped him."

Laura was stunned. Derek got hit? He never mentioned it.

Laura felt a bit guilty, thinking of his always gentle and understanding demeanor towards her.

"Broke up?" Eric, with sharp ears, immediately flew into a rage. "How are you raising Derek? Haven't you heard the rumors? This is the time to get him married quickly. Whether you pressure him or use other means, he must marry a woman, or it'll mess up his career."

"Dad, I pressured Derek," Carl sighed, "But he's dead set on breaking up, not even caring about his career."

Eric sneered, "He can't possibly not care. Try demoting him. He'll cave in within half a month."

"That's not a good idea," Laura blurted out, startled.

"Laura, you don't get it. Sometimes you have to be tough," Eric snapped. "And that guy Derek's been seeing? He needs to cut ties with him. By the way, where is Derek? Why isn't he here yet?"

"I told him to come, but he didn't. Probably scared of getting chewed out," Carl said, looking grim.

"Bastard, all of you are getting more disobedient." Eric, having recently lost his power, was looking for an outlet for his frustration.

He started scolding his two sons. "Look at how you two have been raising your sons. I don't even need to mention Michael, betraying his marriage and having an affair. And Carl, I thought you did a good job, but Derek likes men. Are you trying to drive me to my grave?"

Carl and James hung their heads in silence.

As the only surviving direct descendant of the Jude family, Aaron quickly said weakly, "Eric, don't be angry. I promise to work diligently and be devoted to my wife when I get married."

Eric looked at him with a particular frustration. Aaron was indeed obedient and not very cunning, but among the descendants, he lacked Michael's business acumen, Derek's depth and cunning, and Julia's decisiveness and calmness. His future offspring would probably be mediocre.

Michael couldn't be relied on by Eric. Michael was rebellious, disobedient, and foolish, marrying Megan, who couldn't have children.

Eric also liked Maeve, but Maeve was just a girl.

By the way, only Derek was left.

So Eric sternly said, "Carl, I don't care what you do, but you must correct Derek's sexual orientation."

Laura remained silent.

She wanted to say that Derek's sexual orientation was not a problem; he just made a mistake by falling for her.

But she didn't dare say it. If she did, Eric might faint on the spot.

After dinner, on the way back to the Presidential Palace, Laura and Violet sat together, feeling the heavy atmosphere in the car.

"Laura, you're close to Derek. Tell me, is his feeling for that man very deep?" Violet suddenly looked at Laura intently.

How was Laura supposed to answer that?

Laura felt frustrated and wanted to give Derek a good scolding. "Violet, I don't know," she said reluctantly. "Maybe it's a misunderstanding. Perhaps he just didn't like Blair. Young people prefer freedom in love."

"I thought so too, but recently I've received several reports of Derek meeting that man. He even went to see him on Christmas Eve," Violet said helplessly.

Laura was confused. Hadn't Derek come to see her on Christmas Eve? What kind of trick had he used to hide it?

Carl snorted, "Tomorrow, I'll assign him to a lower position and let him suffer."

"Are you serious?" Laura panicked. She didn't want Derek to ruin his future because of her.

"Laura, you don't understand. If he continues to be stubborn, his future will be limited," Carl said.
