Chapter 375

A musty and foul stench wafted from within.

He shone the light, and the person on the bed recoiled, instinctively shielding their eyes from the glare.

Knowing she was still alive, the weight that had been on his heart seemed to lift finally.

But as he approached, his heart squeezed tight, and he almost dropped the phone.

Was this Cassie?

The woman whose beauty had taken his breath away at their first encounter.

He could scarcely recognize her.

In just a few short days, she had become as thin as a skeletal frame, and not only that but her face had been ravaged with infections.

Feeling as though he were suffocating, Joseph gasped for air, desperate to breathe.

"Joseph, you've come." Cassie, having been in the dark too long, squinted against the light, her eyes sensitive. She couldn't see his face clearly but could sense his familiar, cool presence.

A muted, serene smile played at the corner of her lips. She knew he would find a way out.

He was the devil, after all, and devils aren't easily beaten.

Yet, he must be shocked to see her like this.

She wasn't panicked or afraid and didn't even feel particularly glad to be rescued by him.

She was like still water, devoid of life.

Joseph's eyes stung as he looked at her.

She was right there in front of him, yet she seemed farther away than ever.

He was here, but it felt far too late.
A volatile rage churned within his chest, and he fought desperately to suppress it.

"What happened to your face?"

"Oh, that?" she touched her cheek nonchalantly, her tone as casual as if discussing the weather, "Already had a wound, then someone tampered with my food. The injury just got worse." Her cool demeanor starkly contrasted with the gruesome subject. "Pretty ghastly, huh?"

Joseph's eyes blazed with a bloodthirsty light.

Who could be so cruel as to mar a woman's face?

The more composed she was, the deeper the guilt and pain seeded in his heart, like a volcano on the brink of eruption.

"I'm getting you out of here." He scooped her up suddenly, his large hands trembling uncontrollably—she was too light, weightless almost.

Cassie closed her eyes in quiet surrender.

Joseph carried her out of the dungeon briskly.

Walter, Joe, and the others approached, and upon seeing the woman in his arms, they were all taken aback. "Miss Brooks, she..."

"Find the person who's been bringing her meals," Joseph commanded, each word deliberate and firm.

Walter took a deep breath and quickly had the food delivery person brought forth.

Joseph handed Cassie over to Joe. She could hardly stand on her own and leaned on Joe for support; her eyes, cold and indifferent, watched the one who brought the meals.

The server trembled with fear, "Joseph, you can't blame me. Someone in a cellar getting food every day is already more than enough..."
