Chapter 251
"The ambulance arrived in no time, rushing David to the hospital as he had lost a great deal of blood and fallen unconscious.
Cassie immediately called Arthur, who rushed to the hospital soon after she arrived.
The doors to the emergency room swung open, and a solemn-faced doctor approached with a clipboard in his hand. ""The patient has been stabbed in the left kidney. We need to remove it immediately to save his life. Who is the next of kin? We need a signature right now.""
Cassie was in shock, and Arthur was struggling to grasp the situation. ""Doctor, is the removal really necessary?"" Arthur asked.
""The left kidney is necrotic. It can’t be saved now,"" the doctor explained with a helpless tone. ""If it was salvageable, we'd surely try to save it.""
With a heavy heart, Arthur signed the consent form.
Tears streamed down Cassie's face. ""It's all my fault. That man wanted to kill me, but David took the knife for me.""
Arthur's feelings were a tumultuous mix. ""Don't beat yourself up. The doctor said removing the kidney could save his life. He can function with one kidney, but from now on, he'll need to be more cautious.""
With a bitter smile, Cassie replied, ""With one kidney, how can his body ever be the same again?"" She then asked, ""Have you informed your grandparents?""
""No,"" Arthur shook his head. ""They're old now, and I don't want to shock them. We'll wait until the surgery is over.""
He looked at her, internally sighing at the thought of his grandparents' potential outrage and the scolding she might have to endure from them.
Thankfully, David was stabilized three hours later. The surgery was complete, but he had not yet awakened.
Before long, a police officer arrived. ""Miss Brooks, we've interviewed the suspect. The man who tried to kill you is Brandon Wright. He's not a local here in Madison.""
Cassie, filled with rage, claimed, ""I have no idea who he is.""
The officer nodded. ""According to his statement, he has a twin sister named Bluefield. Five years ago, when Bluefield was just seventeen, she caught the eye of Nathan Zenith from New York's Zenith Family. Nathan pursued her, but Bluefield would rather die than acquiesce. So she jumped to her death from a high-rise. The Brooks family filed a lawsuit against Zenith. Despite the irrefutable evidence against them, the Zeniths hired Joseph, a lawyer who claimed Bluefield seduced Nathan, who rejected her, leading to her suicide out of humiliation. Not only did Nathan escape punishment, but the trial tarnished Bluefield's reputation as well. Their mother couldn't bear it and passed away shortly after due to grief.""
Cassie was stunned. She knew Joseph as a winning attorney, but she was unaware of the lengths he would go for a case. ""So to get back at Joseph, he wanted to kill me?""
“Right, but after that lawsuit five years ago, Joseph vanished into thin air. It wasn't until this year that we learned he had moved to Madison. He wanted Joseph to experience the agony of losing a loved one. Also, Joseph always has bodyguards; he's a cautious man. He tried for years, but he couldn't get close.""
The officer informed her, ""He's been following you for a while, but you always had someone watching your back. It wasn't until today that he saw his chance.""
Suddenly, Cassie felt like she understood everything.
Recently, Joseph had assigned Joe to look after her. It wasn't to guard her against the Robert family but to protect her from Brandon Wright, yet he hadn't told her anything.
She was utterly unguarded today, and if it hadn't been for David, she might have been dead by now.
A bone-chilling dread washed over her, and Cassie suddenly felt like she didn’t know Joseph at all.
""Why should you and David suffer the consequences of Joseph's actions?"" Arthur was furious. ""Cassie, I'd suggest you to stay away from him. Who knows how many enemies he's made over the years with those lawsuits? Rumor has it, he takes on cases for the wealthy and has made a fortune in dubious ways.""
Cassie sat in silence, her gaze fixed on the ground."
