Chapter 1548 Jealousy
After she hung up, Laura saw Michael's friend request on Facebook pop up.
She didn't even bother with it.
Sure, they had a kid together, and even though they were divorced, lots of parents in their case still keep in touch for their kids' sake. But Laura didn't think she and Michael had a friendly split, so why should she have to do video calls just for the kid?
They said it was so Michael could see Maeve, but Maeve was just a few months old and couldn't even talk yet. In the end, it would still be Laura who had to chat with Michael all the time.
Laura was so over dealing with Michael.
As for Maeve's relationship with Michael, Maeve could figure that out herself when she got older. If Maeve liked Michael, she could reach out to him; if not, no big deal. Laura wasn't going to get involved.
Michael was fuming when he saw Laura had hung up on him.
He really wanted to see Maeve tonight, which was why he called.
The Jude family had a bunch of guests over tonight, and some relatives had brought their little kids. The kids were super cute, and Caroline had mentioned Maeve a few times, which made him call Laura.
He sent Laura two more friend requests on Facebook, but she ignored them. He knew Laura didn't want to add him.
Michael stormed back to the living room, only to find Aaron on the couch, using Facebook, and chatting with Laura.
Damn it, Laura wouldn't talk to him, but she was having a lively chat with Aaron on Christmas Eve.
A wave of anger surged through him.
Michael suddenly snatched Aaron's phone. He glanced at the chat history and saw that Aaron had sent Laura Christmas greetings just after midnight, and Laura had quickly replied with a 'Merry Christmas' and a cute emoji.
"Why'd you take my phone?" Aaron immediately stood up to grab it back.
Michael dodged and quickly scrolled up, discovering that Aaron and Laura occasionally chatted, and Laura often sent pictures of Maeve to Aaron.
Michael's eyes widened as he looked at Maeve's sweet smile, filled with jealousy.
"Aaron, so you two have been in contact all along," Michael grabbed Aaron's collar forcefully, "Laura and I are divorced. You have nothing to do with her."
"Laura is still Carl's goddaughter and my relative, and she's also Maeve's mom. Isn't it normal for me to chat with her?" Aaron shot back.
Aaron, usually good-tempered, was also a bit upset by Michael's aggression.
"Is that so? Then why do I feel like Laura is deliberately flirting with you? Look at these emojis she sent you; they're full of innuendo." Michael was tempted to smash the phone right then and there.
After a moment of shock, Aaron furrowed his brows in anger. "What's wrong with us occasionally greeting each other? It's basic courtesy, and these emojis are trendy now. We use them all the time. I finally get why Laura divorced you; you're completely unreasonable."
"If you hadn't helped Julia back then, would Laura and I have divorced? Now you get to see Maeve's photos all the time, but I, her father, haven't received a single one," Michael shouted.
All the pent-up anger of the night exploded. Michael accused, "And Megan is your sister-in-law. Do you show her the same respect you show Laura? She came over for dinner tonight, and you didn't even greet her. She sat there alone, ignored by everyone. Do you know how awkward that was for me?"
"Because I don't like Megan at all. No one in the family likes Megan," Aaron shot back, just as angry. "You're the one who insisted on bringing her over, making everyone uncomfortable. If you like her, spend Christmas Eve with her somewhere else. Why did you bring her here?"
"Aaron, damn you!" Michael tightened his grip on Aaron's collar.
At that moment, James and Julia, hearing the commotion, came downstairs.
"Dad, you're just in time," Aaron complained, "I sent Laura a Christmas greeting on Facebook, and Michael, like a lunatic, is giving me a hard time. He even said Laura was flirting with me and accused me of not greeting Megan tonight. It's not just me; no one paid attention to Megan. My phone is still in his hand."
Originally, Aaron felt guilty for betraying Michael, but now he felt none. He thought Michael had become completely unreasonable since getting involved with Megan.
"Michael, do you need to get your head checked?" James couldn't hold back his anger. "First, you claimed Laura had something with Derek, and now you tell me that she's flirting with Aaron. Let me tell you clearly, I also received a Christmas greeting from Laura. Does that mean she's flirting with me too?"
Michael was left bewildered. Even James had received a Christmas greeting from Laura, but Michael, who had been once the closest person to Laura, was now the farthest from her.
At that moment, Michael suddenly felt a sense of suffocation.
"I received one too," Caroline said, "Laura and I chat almost every day. She often sends me little videos and photos of Maeve. Even though you are divorced, Laura always reaches out on holidays. She's very polite. You're accusing Aaron of ignoring Megan tonight, but you're actually accusing all of us, aren't you? Michael, you insisted on bringing Megan home for Christmas, and none of us agreed. You begged us. I said Megan could come, she could eat, but we wouldn't interact with her. You still insisted on bringing her."
"Mom, Megan is my wife now. Why can't you treat her like how you treated Laura?" Michael said painfully with his eyes closed. "Didn't you see how pitiful Megan looked tonight? She was trying so hard to please you all."
Julia said coldly, "I didn't find her pitiful. For a family like ours, we can't accept someone who had an affair."
Caroline agreed, but she was also exhausted by Michael. "Michael, please, let us be. We're old. You can't force us to accept someone we don't like. Tonight, in front of so many relatives, Megan put on a pitiful and aggrieved act. Who was that for? It's not because Megan is disfigured or disabled. Even if Megan were perfectly fine, I still wouldn't like her because she's rotten to the core."
