Chapter 575
Joseph gazed at her, his brow furrowed in a mix of surprise and concern. "Are you alright?" he asked.
Megan, sensing the tension, swiftly reached for a handful of tissues and offered them to her.
Cassie, however, forcefully uncurled her hand, stooping slightly as a soft chuckle escaped her lips. "I'm fine, truly," she reassured them, her voice laced with a hint of bitterness. "Your melodramatic display simply unsettled my stomach."
Joseph's expression shifted abruptly. " Cassie, watch your words," he cautioned.
"Did I say something wrong?" Cassie retorted, her gaze lifting to meet his, a crimson hue tingeing her eyes. "Are you here to offer an apology or to flaunt your affection before me? Joseph, I am well aware that you harbor no love for me, yet by the law of our marriage certificate, I am still your wife. Can you not afford me a shred of dignity?"
She then turned her attention to Megan. "And you," she began, her tone icy, "entering in tears, begging for forgiveness on bended knee. Is it my forgiveness you seek? Do you believe that kneeling can erase the atrocities committed by Nathan? His violent acts, his use of drugs, his murderous intent... Do you think a few apologies can rectify everything? What if I were to kill Nathan? If I were to kneel, would you forgive me then?"
Megan's lips trembled as she stammered, "That's not what I..."
"Leave," Cassie commanded, her finger pointing towards the door. "This will not be dealt with privately. Whatever crime he has committed, he will face the full force of the law."
Megan opened her mouth to protest, but Cassie cut her off. "Don't kneel before me, don't beg for my forgiveness. Even if you were to kneel until your death, it would be futile. I am not Joseph, I will not pity you."
" Cassie," Joseph warned, his voice heavy with exasperation.
"Did I say something wrong? " Cassie retorted. "We are the victims here. Yet Megan behaves as though our refusal to forgive her makes me the villain." She scoffed, "Leave. If I see you again, I fear I may lose my lunch. Your children may not survive the ordeal either."
Joseph, though seething at Cassie's words, was concerned for the unborn children. He gently took Megan into his arms and exited the room.
Cassie slammed the door shut, her back pressed against it as she slid down to the floor. She buried her face in her knees, her body wracked with silent sobs. The pain was unbearable, both physically and emotionally. The man she loved no longer had eyes for her. How could she protect herself from the hurt inflicted by these two?
The following morning, at seven o'clock, Cassie checked on David in the neighboring room before setting out to buy breakfast. As she approached Laura's room, a loud crash echoed from within. "Bastard, how could Cassie ever fall for someone like you? You're not a man, you're a devil."
"Laura."
Cassie rushed in, finding Laura leaning against the bed, her body trembling with rage. But her strength was fleeting, and she soon collapsed onto the pillow.
Joseph stood at the foot of the bed, his handsome face a mask of conflicting emotions.
"What did you say to her?" Cassie demanded, shoving Joseph aside. "Laura is already in such a state, why can't you leave her be?"
Joseph glanced at the two weary women, his fist clenched tightly. "I offered her and David thirty million dollars each. We would consider the matter settled."
"Fine, let's just let it go." Laura's voice was barely a whisper.
"You're insane," Cassie shot back, disbelief etched across her face. "Are you and David so desperate for that thirty million? If we don't bring Nathan to justice, he will continue to harm you. He fears nothing now. Joseph, did you threaten her?"
Joseph's lips pressed into a thin line, his silence a damning confirmation.
