Chapter 623
Every eye in the meeting room turned to Cassie. Megan, quick to react, flashed a warm smile and greeted, "Please, don't surround me. islet us start the board meeting. Welcome back, Cassie."
Cassie returned her gaze, her voice cool. " Are you a director? Who gave you the right to sit here?"
"I've not seen you for several years, Cassie, and since you're not fully aware of the company's current situation. I thought I'd give you a report," Megan responded, her voice laced with a sense of helplessness and injustice.
Edward came to Megan's defense. " Cassie, I understand you have personal grievances, but there's no need to bring them into the company. We owe a great deal to Megan and Joseph. They've managed to double the company's profits over the years, estimated to be around two billion."
"Yes, you claimed to be dead, but clearly, you're not. You've been absent from the company for three years. What kind of chairman are you?" A shareholder's voice echoed through the room.
Megan, facing the shareholders' accusations, interjected. " Cassie must have her reasons."
"Megan, you're such a good person. Despite how Cassie treats you, you still defend her." A few shareholders immediately praised Megan. Everyone knew that Megan was Joseph's woman and was destined to be his wife.
As for Cassie, they believed it was her own fault for not being able to hold onto Joseph.
"That's right, no wonder Joseph chose you. Men appreciate understanding women." A few shareholders chimed in with their comments.
Cassie's gaze fell sharply on the speaker, a female shareholder, and she couldn't help but laugh.
"Three years since I last returned and everyone's eager to kick me while I'm down? But don't forget who asked you to attend this board meeting." Cassie's voice was icy. The room fell silent. It was Joseph who had instructed them to do so.
"Megan, I suggest you leave now, before I have Jan escort you out." Cassie warned, her tone frosty. "And didn't Joseph tell you about your current status? Do I need to remind you?"
Megan's face blanched. She was aware that Cassie and Joseph were not divorced. If Cassie revealed her identity as the mistress, she would be seen as the third party.
"Fine, I'll leave." Megan rose, her face reflecting a sense of profound injustice.
Ignoring the hostile glares from the shareholders, Cassie announced, "As the chairman, I want to inform you that you have been dismissed. Once you've handed over your work to Jan, you can leave."
"That's outrageous," Edward retorted, his voice trembling with anxiety. "We do not agree with Megan's dismissal."
"The position of the CEO should be decided by the shareholders' vote," the directors chimed in.
"Do you believe you can rely on Joseph and have nothing to fear?" Cassie challenged, her gaze sweeping across the room.
The shareholders fell silent.
"Alright then, let me make a call to your Joseph," Cassie proposed.
She dialed Joseph's number, and soon his cold voice echoed from the other end, "Who is this?"
The shareholders sighed in disappointment. Joseph didn't even have Cassie's number saved, a stark contrast to Megan.
Megan, who had reached the door, paused, a smug smile playing on her lips.
Cassie, however, remained calm. "It's me, Cassie."
" Cassie, what do you want now?"
"Joseph, I have you on speaker," Cassie interrupted. "I didn't expect that after three years, the shareholders of my company still don't take me seriously. I can't even fire someone insignificant like Megan."
The moment Joseph received word of her intention to dismiss Megan, a nameless fury began to swell within him. He was on the brink of voicing his objection when Cassie interjected with a casual remark. "Oh, I have something in my pocket, feels like a certificate of sorts, it's jabbing me."
On the verge of stepping into the elevator, Joseph narrowly avoided kicking the fire box in his path.
A certificate? Could it be their marriage certificate? It seemed Cassie was resorting to her old tricks, threatening him once more.
Cursing under his breath, Joseph clenched his jaw and forced his voice to adopt a softer tone. "If you wish to terminate her employment, then do so. Now that you've returned, you can manage the situation yourself. Do as you please."
He silently hoped she would run the company into the ground.
Cassie, idly twirling a pen in her hand, let out a sigh before adopting a flirtatious tone. "But they're all so focused on Megan. It's so frustrating, they're difficult to control. I'm somewhat disappointed."
Joseph felt a shiver run down his spine, but he maintained his composure, replying, "The Peace Group is ultimately yours. You hold the final say. If any shareholders resist, I'll find someone to talk to them."
"Thank you, goodbye," Cassie ended the call abruptly.
The meeting room descended into silence. From the tone of Joseph's voice, it was clear he was firmly in Cassie's corner. Was it because she was his ex-wife, and thus held a different status in his eyes?
And Cassie's tone... it was evident that her relationship with Joseph ran deep.
A wave of unease washed over the shareholders, their earlier words of support for Megan now a source of regret. They knew all too well the consequences of crossing Joseph.
Edward quickly cleared his throat, "We all follow Joseph's lead."
"Yes, yes, we'll follow Joseph's lead," the shareholders echoed in agreement.
