Chapter 399
"Dad, the damage you see—it's Vera's handiwork," Cassie interjected, her voice a tremulous whisper. "I was imprisoned in the dungeon by the Hernandez family not too long ago. Vera had Celeste lace my corn chowder with something that caused my face to deteriorate.”
Leo Chapman's shock was palpable, but upon reflection, he recognized that Vera was indeed capable of such a heinous act. "That deranged woman, I'll confront her..."
"Dad, remember, today is the engagement party for the Yates and Prescott families. The guest list is filled with high-profile names. You can't cause a scene, and with Walter and the others present, they won't back you up," Cassie cautioned, her hand resting lightly on his arm.
Leo's fists clenched in impotent frustration. "But your face..."
"Uncle, we must exercise patience," Joseph interjected, his voice a deep rumble. "Those who have harmed Cassie will not go unpunished."
Leo felt a heavy burden settle on his heart. He had spent the majority of his life succeeding in business, yet he felt a profound debt to his daughter. "Cassie, I've decided to divorce Vera after Luna's wedding. I won't hesitate anymore, even if the entire Chapman family objects.”
Cassie's eyes widened in surprise; she had always thought her father had been somewhat lenient toward Vera and her sister.
"Don't look at me like that. I'm serious. I own forty percent of the Chapman Corporation, and I've decided to give you thirty-five percent, reserving five percent for Luna. I'll have the lawyers draft the documents soon."
"Dad..."
"That's final. Just wait for the shares to be transferred to you. I'll make sure you're set for life, even if someone does you wrong, you'll still have the means to take care of yourself... perhaps even find a young companion," Leo Chapman declared sternly, his gaze challenging Joseph.
Cassie nearly choked on her own surprise.
She hadn't anticipated her father being so forthright and progressive.
"Dad, that won't be necessary," Joseph said, a smile playing on his lips.
"Hmf, men are full of empty promises," Leo Chapman retorted, his voice laced with distrust.
Joseph was left speechless.
Cassie chuckled, taken aback by her dad's unexpected sense of humor.
Vera, not far away, watched the scene unfold, irritation simmering within her.
There was Leo Chapman, at Luna's wedding of all places, conversing jovially with his illegitimate daughter.
"Aunt Vera, don't let them get to you. I'll have someone teach them a lesson soon," Felix promised, an icy smirk forming as he followed her gaze.
He wasn't about to let his recent humiliation at their hands go unpunished.
Vera hesitated, "But the Hernandezes are here…"
"You don't know the half of it. The Hernandezes despise Joseph. They’re probably itching to knock him down a peg or two," Felix informed her, his tone conspiratorial.
"Felix, I knew our Luna was blessed. We didn't choose the wrong side," Vera said, her face lighting up with joy.

As the banquet was on the brink of commencing.
A hotel waiter guided Joseph and Cassie to a table tucked away at the very back.
"Apologies, the guests at the front are quite distinguished. Please take a seat here."
Cassie's gaze drifted to the front, where the Hernandez family was seated at the head table. As they were led to their place, scornful looks followed them.
