Chapter 1556 His Wedding
Seeing the determined look in Derek's eyes, Laura couldn't help but ask, "Why?"
"My dad probably never realized I was his most reliable right-hand man. I handled so much for him every day. Once he cuts me off, he'll struggle to move forward."
Derek laughed casually, "He has no idea how much I've done for him behind the scenes all these years. Some people only realize the importance of those behind them after they've lost them."
Laura, suddenly understanding, pouted, "So you've had everything under control all along. I thought you were really willing to give up power for me. I was moved for nothing."
The morning light fell on her face and lips, her lively eyes showing a playful and charming expression.
Derek clenched his fists by his side, almost unable to resist kissing her. "Laura, everything I told you yesterday was sincere. But I also told you that since I've decided to pursue you, I was fully prepared. I don't want anyone to easily stop or force me when I want to be with you in the future. Nor do I want to become like Julia. I want to be in control of my own love, understand?"
Derek looked at her against the sunlight. His face was clearly very handsome, but his words made her feel at ease.
"Alright, I got it. Let's get in the car." She opened the car door and got in.
The two of them left the Presidential Palace one after the other.
Soon, the news of Derek's demotion hit the headlines.
After Carl became president, the media dug into Derek's background thoroughly. To the people of Madison, Derek was both handsome and capable, and he was even seen as a potential future youngest president of Madison.
Now that Derek had been relegated to a basic position in the State Department, the media began speculating that he had made a mistake during Christmas and was harshly reprimanded and demoted by Carl.
The media's stories were vivid, and the internet was flooded with mockery.
Laura complained to Derek after seeing it. "These media are just making things up."
"The media always does that," Derek, the person involved, was quite indifferent, "Don't worry, no one will be talking about me by tomorrow. Another member of the Jude family is quite newsworthy lately."
Laura was taken aback; she knew he was talking about Michael.
Michael's wedding with Megan was to be held tomorrow. It was said that Michael would be arriving in a helicopter, and the wedding would cost fifty million dollars, even booking the only seven-star hotel in Madison. The media also revealed that Michael had given Megan jewelry worth tens of millions of dollars.
The more extravagant the wedding was, the more ridiculous Laura felt.
Originally, Laura didn't want to care, but Michael had gone too far, as if he was deliberately humiliating her.
"Laura, no one from the Jude family will attend tomorrow. That wedding will be a joke. Don't overthink it," Derek gently comforted her.
"I know, but I'm still pretty angry. Michael is just trampling on my dignity," Laura complained angrily.
"Michael probably didn't want such a grand wedding," Derek said. "He's left the Jude Group, and the Ocean Blue Group's position is shaky. Michael probably doesn't have much cash on hand. It must be Megan who insisted on it."
"Megan just wants to make me jealous and humiliate me," Laura fumed. She really hated Michael now. Not only did he betray their marriage, but he also had the audacity to marry Megan so ostentatiously.
"Alright, don't overthink it. When we get married, I'll give you a grand wedding too," Derek said with a smile.
"Who said I was going to marry you?" Laura teased. "Besides, I'm not that vain. To me, a wedding doesn't need to be too big. As long as it's romantic and happy, that's enough."
Derek grinned, "Yes, I remember."
"Don't make it sound like I've agreed to your proposal," Laura huffed.
"Alright, I'll do my best. How about a movie date tomorrow night?" Derek suggested.
"Okay," Laura agreed without thinking.
Just as well, with Michael's wedding tomorrow, Laura might get more upset the more she thought about it. Having Derek around to keep her company and cheer her up would make her feel better.
The next day, at the seven-star hotel, a grand wedding was about to take place.
In the presidential suite on the twenty-second floor, Megan was wearing a wedding dress adorned with luxurious diamonds.
Several makeup artists were touching up her makeup, all enviously complimenting her. "Your features are so delicate. This is the easiest bridal makeup I've ever done."
"Your wedding dress is so beautiful. I heard Michael hired top wedding designers from abroad to custom-make it for you. These are all diamonds, right? Michael is so good to you," a makeup artist praised.
"Your diamond ring is so big. I'm so envious," another makeup artist chimed in.
Michael stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, feeling annoyed by the flattery and noise behind him.
What did they mean by the easiest bridal makeup?
She started at five in the morning, and they were still touching up. Was that so-called easy?
"Michael, are your parents here?" Megan suddenly asked him.
Michael stiffened. He turned to the makeup artists and said, "Wait outside."
Once the room was empty except for the two of them, he said, "My parents are busy today. They won't be coming."
"What? You're their son, and you're getting married today," Megan got agitated. "If they don't come today, our wedding will be a joke."
"No, it won't. Today's wedding is so grand, others will only envy you," Michael reassured her softly.
"Fine, even if your parents don't come, surely some of your relatives from the Jude family will," Megan said, compromising.
"Megan, a wedding is just about the two of us." Michael didn't want to lie to her.
"So you're saying no one from the Jude family will come today?" Megan was devastated. "What do they mean by this? Do they look down on me because I'm disabled? Am I such a disgrace to the Jude family?"
Michael comforted her, "No, don't think that way."
"They'll definitely laugh at me behind my back." Megan interrupted him, feeling distressed.
