Chapter 1559 Bernice Kidnapped Megan
Bernice was pretty pleased with the look on Michael's face. 'Didn't you always say Laura was a monster? Well, let me set the record straight—Laura never did anything wrong.'
"Laura took the fall for me," Bernice said, swirling her wine with a cold smile. "She found out I kidnapped Megan at dawn. By the time she got there, Megan was already hurt badly by me. Laura knew if I got caught, you'd kill me for sure. But her? No way. She was your wife, the President's goddaughter, and the mother of your kid. Even if you were mad, you wouldn't kill her."
Michael's eyes narrowed. "Did Laura put you up to this? Is she trying to get back to me by spinning this crazy story? Does she think I'm an idiot?"
"Laura wants to get back to you? Keep dreaming," Bernice scoffed. "Michael, use your brain for once. Think about who Laura really is. You lived with her and shared a bed. Do you really think she's some kind of monster? She can't even kill a fish, let alone torture Megan."
"Shut up, stop lying for Laura." Michael's hands shook with rage. "Stop covering for her. Even Cassie would do a better job than you. You say you did it, but you don't even know Megan. You have no reason to hate her."
"Who said I don't have a reason?" Bernice's voice turned icy. "I hate Megan's guts. Before Esmerald married into the Zenith family, she was my mom's friend. Nina was my best friend. Megan killed them both. If Laura hadn't stopped me that day, I would've killed Megan myself. Why would I let that bitch walk free?"
Michael's shock was palpable. Bernice took a deep breath. "Believe it or not, that's the truth. I grew up with Nina and her mom. And think about it—what time did Laura leave the Presidential Palace that morning? Did she even have time to do it?"
Bernice's confidence almost convinced Michael.
But he didn't want to believe it.
Because if it was all a misunderstanding, the truth would be even harder to swallow.
He always thought Laura was a monster for hurting Megan, which is why he divorced her. He felt guilty for Megan's suffering, so he married her to make it up to her.
Whenever he thought of Laura, he reminded himself she was unworthy, vicious, and that he was a fool for ever loving her.
He couldn't stand the idea of a vicious Laura.
But now Bernice was telling him Laura didn't do it.
And that it was Laura who had stopped Bernice from killing Megan.
"Megan knows too," Bernice suddenly chuckled, lowering her voice. "When I threw Megan into that filthy bucket, she asked who I was. She knew I wasn't Laura or Cassie. She just never guessed it was me."
"Shut up! You psycho, why'd you kidnap Megan? Why'd you make Laura take the fall? Why didn't you come clean back then?" Michael snapped, grabbing Bernice by the neck.
He was losing it. It was Bernice who had wrecked his marriage.
He could've had a happy family. He didn't have to get divorced. He could've come home every day after work and seen his kid.
But it was all ruined.
He had to marry Megan and live this miserable life. He didn't even want to go back to that so-called home.
And it was all because of Bernice.
Michael's eyes were blazing with rage. His grip on Bernice's neck tightened.
Bernice's face turned red, and the wine glass in her hand crashed to the ground, startling everyone nearby.
"Michael's gonna kill her!" someone shouted, and the place erupted into chaos.
Luckily, a few guys nearby managed to pull them apart. Bernice clutched her throat, gasping for air, looking like she'd just escaped death.
"Let me go, I'll kill her!" Michael yelled, still fuming.
The security guards, seeing how wild he was, held him down even tighter.
"Bernice, are you okay?" A few men rushed over to help her up.
"I'm fine," Bernice said, looking shaken. "Michael's terrifying. Laura, his ex-wife, is my friend. I met Michael today and saw he hated Laura, so I just tried to explain that Laura didn't hurt Megan. But he wouldn't listen and went nuts, trying to strangle me."
That was a lot to take in.
Many people there knew about the drama between Michael, Laura, and Megan, and they started to piece things together.
Michael thought his ex-wife hurt Megan. He was protecting Megan and didn't want anyone defending Laura, so he lost it.
Did he really need to love Megan that much?
Some of the business elites couldn't help but look down on him.
In their world, a wife's status at home was untouchable. Michael, though, didn't seem to care about his wife. No wonder the Jude family didn't make him the heir.
He really didn't deserve it.
"Bernice, you bitch," Michael pointed at her, laughing darkly. "I'll get to the bottom of this. If it was really you, I won't let you off."
With that, he shook off the security guards and stormed out, looking furious.
Everyone's eyes were on Bernice. She let out a bitter smile. "Back then, I secretly taught that shameless Megan a lesson for Laura. Well, now he knows the truth, and it's gonna be a mess."
"I see." A wealthy lady chimed in, "Everyone knows about Michael and Megan. They went too far. It's unfair. In the end, it's Michael who protects Megan too much. I really don't get what's so great about Megan. Michael acts like a madman."
