Chapter 117
"As Cassie was packing up her things to join her coworkers for dinner, several police officers suddenly burst in. ""Who's Cassie?"" they demanded.
The room was a sea of questioning glances. Cassie felt a troubling premonition rising in her chest, but she stood up anyway and said, ""That would be me...""
A detective said with a detached tone, ""This morning, the Lublin Hotel caught fire, resulting in millions in damages. We received a call from the hotel's proprietor, and Height Company claims you were in charge of the facility at the time. You'll need to come with us for questioning.""
Cassie's head was suddenly thundering with noise. ""This has nothing to do with me! I left the hotel over two months ago. They're trying to make me a scapegoat.""
""Sorry, but Height Company has provided evidence of you accepting kickbacks and replacing certified wiring with uncertified. No more excuses,"" the officer retorted.
They walked her out, hands cuffed, as a throng of reporters gathered underneath.
""Look at this so-called star designer, she used substandard wiring in her projects, leading to a fire.""
""Christ, I just paid Mason Stone for remodels. Forget it, I want my money back.""
""Me too. Who knows if my house will catch fire too?""
In a rush, previous customers at Mason Stone were lining up for refunds, and even those mid-renovation were questioning their safety..
Mason Stone, previously held in high esteem, had plummeted from grace.
At the police station...
In the interrogation room, a harsh lamp above Cassie made her dizzy, but she insisted, ""I've told you, none of this is my doing. I was just the designer. Alexander was the project manager; he was in charge of all materials.""
""Save it. Your partner in crime, Ben, has already confessed. You worked directly with him, pulling in over six hundred thousand for yourself, and gave fifty thousand to shut your boss up. Alexander couldn't stand it anymore and complained to Mr. Brooks who decided to replace you. Now you're trying to bite back.""
Another female officer chimed in, ""From a rich family, yet you act as if you've never seen money. A real moral failure.""
Chills ran down Cassie's spine. ""That's not true! I was the one who reported Alexander, but then...""
""Enough,"" the officer cut her off. ""Your own father has confessed. You're his daughter; Alexander is just his nephew. You had the most power on site.""
""That's impossible,"" Cassie whispered, shaking her head. Rising to her feet, she proclaimed, ""I'm his flesh and blood. Why would he lie about me? Am I less important to him than my aunt's nephew?""
""Calm down,"" the officer gestured dismissively. ""Take her away. Lock her up.""
""I want to make a call. I want someone to bail me out,"" Cassie screamed.
""Sorry, but given the gravity of your case, you cannot have contact with anyone before it's settled.""
