Chapter 1016 Your Bed Has Your Scent
David burst through the door the next second.
Cassie barely had time to hide the lunchbox on her desk, but luckily, Joseph had already taken the flowers.
"Cassie, you are having lunch?" David's eyes darkened when he saw the lunchbox. "Did Joseph send it?"
Cassie wanted to say yes but knew admitting it would be hard to explain. "No, the staff brought it up."
Quickly changing the subject, she asked, "How did you know Joseph came to my office?"
"I was worried he might bother you, so I asked a few employees downstairs to let me know if he showed up," David said with a smile. "Did he leave?"
"I didn't let him come up," Cassie lied, feeling guilty.
"Good." David's eyes flashed, and he suddenly smiled. "Your office smells nice."
"I just sprayed some perfume," Cassie replied, guessing it was the scent of Joseph's flowers. Now that she had lied once, she had to keep it up. "Have you had lunch? Do you want to eat downstairs?"
Thinking about Joseph, she didn't dare stay any longer.
"Sure." David nodded. "Are you going to bring your lunchbox?"
"No, if I knew you were coming, I wouldn't have had the staff send it up."
Cassie smiled, quickly got up, and walked downstairs with him.
"Wait, I need to use the restroom," David said, heading towards the break room.
Cassie's heart nearly stopped, but David moved too quickly. Before she could think of an excuse, he had already opened the door.
Luckily, the break room was empty. Joseph and the flowers were gone. The only hiding place seemed to be the cabinet.
'Did Joseph actually hide in the cabinet?'
Cassie felt a mix of emotions but finally calmed down. Maybe she was overthinking it. David didn't seem suspicious.
After David came out of the restroom, he took her arm and led her out of the office.
As they left, Coco gave her a strange look.
Once they reached the cafeteria, Cassie texted Coco: [Find Joseph and get him out of here.]
Five minutes later, Coco replied: [Joseph said he's not leaving. He's tired and wants to nap on your bed.]
Cassie was furious.
"Cassie, can you put your phone down when you're with me? Let's enjoy our meal," David said gently.
"I'm just giving Coco some work instructions," Cassie said, putting down her phone.
"Cassie, there's something I want to discuss," David said suddenly. "Oliver is your son. You always sneak around with him, and it can't go on like this. How about I acknowledge him as my son and declare he's ours? After all, you were missing for three years, and no one would suspect if we had a child together."
Cassie was stunned.
Seeing her reaction, David pressed on, "We can't keep pretending he's Liam's kid. Do you want Oliver to always live in the shadows? What about future parent-child activities? You wouldn't even have the right to participate."
"Let me think about it," Cassie said, feeling overwhelmed. David's suggestion did make some sense.
If she wanted to tell people Oliver was her child, she needed to find him a legitimate father. Otherwise, if Joseph found out Oliver was his son, with his clingy nature, she'd never be able to cut ties with him.
"What's there to think about?" David's face showed disappointment. "Oliver is good and sensible. I know it hurts him when he can't be with his mom like other kids. He just doesn't want to burden you."
Cassie gripped her fork tightly.
She knew it. Oliver's sensibility made her heart ache.
"Unless you still haven't decided to be with me," David suddenly said.
Cassie was taken aback.
'Hadn't I already decided? Hadn't I moved in with him? I'm even ready to make love to him, but he had chosen to sleep separately. And lately, Joseph had been frequently appearing in her life, making her feel unsettled.'
"David, you said Oliver is very sensible. I need to ask for his opinion." Cassie found an excuse.
"Alright," David said, though he looked disappointed. "Do you need me to go shopping with you this afternoon? Is there anything you want to buy? I haven't spent much on you since we got married."
"No need. I have an important meeting this afternoon," Cassie said truthfully.
"Okay then. I'll work overtime at the office. After all, my wife is a workaholic," David joked, but it only made Cassie feel more guilty.
That guilt reached its peak when she returned to the office and found Joseph sleeping in her bedroom.
"Joseph, who allowed you to sleep here? Get out," Cassie angrily tried to pull him up, but Joseph's tall body didn't budge.
Joseph groggily opened his eyes. "Cassie, let me sleep for a while. I didn't rest well last night."
"If you didn't rest well, you can go home. Why come here?" Cassie said through gritted teeth.
"Your bed has your scent. It helps me sleep peacefully."
Joseph buried his head in her pillow and took a deep breath. "So fragrant."
Cassie was so disgusted by his shamelessness that her face turned red. "Joseph, I'm begging you. I'm married, and you're causing a lot of trouble for my marriage."
"How am I causing trouble? When David came in earlier, I hid in the closet for you." Joseph looked at her with dim eyes. "You know, I was often locked in the closet by my nanny when I was a child. I have a phobia of closets."
Cassie was taken aback. What he said was true.
For someone who had been traumatized in a closet to hide in one again took a lot of courage.
But looking at his handsome face, she didn't want to soften. "You brought this on yourself. You came to find me."
"You're right. For you, I'm willing."
Joseph suddenly sat up and started unbuttoning his shirt.
Seeing his chest gradually exposed, Cassie felt her scalp tingle. "Joseph, you pervert, what are you doing?"
