Chapter 1539 Didn't Realize He Was So Shameless
Laura pulled out her phone and checked the sales numbers for the company's products tonight.
While the party was going on, the live streaming platform was also pushing several of the company's top products. Thanks to big discounts and some celebrity endorsements, sales were through the roof. By the end of the year, she was looking at a sweet bonus.
Like Cassie said, Laura was gorgeous and made her own money. Why should she feel inferior? She never relied on anyone.
Even though Laura had a kid, she was only 26. What was there to be insecure about?
She opened up tonight's entertainment news and saw Levi trending again. His photographer had snapped some pics of him at the banquet and posted them on WhatsApp, where fans were gushing over his looks.
But the fact that Laura and Levi had been sitting together didn’t make the news, probably because someone at the company had squashed it.
Laura casually clicked on one of Levi's photos.
Suddenly, Derek's cold voice came from beside her, "Your taste in idols sucks."
Laura turned to look at him. The neon lights outside the window lit up Derek's handsome profile. His once gentle eyes were now full of sarcasm. She shot back, "You don't need to comment on my taste. I know it's not great."
Derek was at a loss for words.
After a moment, Derek realized he had been too harsh out of jealousy.
He wasn't usually this sharp, but jealousy had turned him into someone else.
With the driver from the Presidential Palace in the front seat, he could only reach out in the dark, his fingers creeping towards her hand on her lap.
When he finally grabbed her fingers in the shadows, Laura's face flushed, and she yanked her hand away.
Derek's hand kept moving closer, and Laura shook it off again, stomping hard on his foot and glaring at him.
"Why'd you step on me?" Derek asked, looking innocent.
Laura was furious. He was counting on her not making a scene in front of the driver. How had she not noticed how shameless he was?
She scooted closer to the window, as far away from him as possible.
They didn't speak for the rest of the ride. When they got to the parking lot, Laura got out first, with Derek trailing behind.
They lived next to each other, so they walked in the same direction.
After a bit, Derek grabbed her arm from behind.
"Derek, what are you doing?" Laura panicked and looked around. Luckily, it was late, and the place was quiet.
Derek grabbed her arms and tucked them into the coat draped over his shoulders. After both arms were inside, he buttoned it up for her. When his fingers reached the buttons on her chest, his hands accidentally brushed against her, making Laura's face burn.
"I'll do it myself," Laura said.
She looked down and quickly buttoned up.
The night wind blew her long black hair over her shoulders. Derek's gaze fell on her chest, where he had briefly touched. Her chest was soft. "Wearing just a trench coat in this cold weather, you'll freeze."
"None of your business," Laura snapped.
"If I don't care about you, who will?" His words, carried by the night wind, reached her ears.
In the past, she might've been touched, but after tonight's heart-to-heart, she felt more annoyed than anything. "Derek, we're at the Presidential Palace. Don't talk nonsense. I'm too tired to deal with you. I need to go to bed."
She turned to leave, and Derek followed, "I heard you're heading back to Silverwood tomorrow."
"Yeah," Laura replied.
She wished she could leave right now.
"It's good for you to spend time with your parents. I'll come see you after I finish my work," he said.
Laura almost stumbled in her high heels. "Derek, are you nuts?"
"I'm not crazy. I miss you when I don't see you for a few days." Derek had his hands in his pockets, keeping a distance, but his words made her heart race.
"Shut up." Laura glared at him, both embarrassed and annoyed. "You're not allowed to come see me."
"You can't stop me," Derek said defiantly, "I'll take you tomorrow morning."
"I don't want you to take me," Laura shot back.
"Fine, then I'll have the driver take you." Derek had plenty of ways to deal with her, but he didn't want to force her.
Laura snorted. The thought of him not taking her didn't make her feel better. Instead, it made her angrier.
If he didn't take her just because she said so, did he really not want to take her? Was he just playing along with her?
The more she thought about it, the more upset she got. When they reached their place, she ignored him and walked away.
Derek watched her back and smiled helplessly.
The next day, Laura woke up and started packing.
As she was leaving, the nanny, Jessa Greer, came over. "Laura, Derek asked me to personally take you and Maeve back to Silverwood."
"No need, Elliot has arranged a driver to take me," Laura said, stunned for a moment before refusing.
"But Derek checked with Elliot. Only one assistant will be taking you, and they aren't familiar with Maeve. They won't hold her, and with a two-hour flight, Maeve won't sleep well. It will be exhausting for you alone."
Jessa was very firm. "I'll come back after taking you to Silverwood."
Laura didn't expect Derek to be so sneaky, even checking with Elliot.
But Jessa was right, having someone with her would indeed make the trip easier.
Before boarding the plane, she received a Facebook message from Derek: [Before Christmas, I'll explain everything between Blair and me to my parents.]
Laura: [It's none of my business.]
Derek: [Remember to send me a Facebook message when you get to Silverwood.]
Laura was so annoyed that she didn't reply.
She looked down and focused on Maeve.
But as soon as the plane took off, Maeve started crying.
Despite her small size, Maeve could be quite a handful. She didn't sleep much on the plane and always wanted to be held and walked around. Fortunately, Jessa accompanied her, so Laura wasn't too exhausted during the two-hour flight.
Laura had to admit that Derek's arrangement was right.
After she arrived in Silverwood and collected her luggage, Derek called.
Laura declined the call and turned to Jessa, who was still holding Maeve and hadn't even opened her phone, making it impossible for her to contact Derek.
A minute later, Derek sent a message: [Seeing you decline the call, I know you've arrived safely. Have fun.]
Laura still didn't reply.
When they arrived at the Miller Villa, Rose had already arranged for a distant relative of the Miller family to act as a nanny.
