Chapter 413
Having ensured Leo Chapman was comfortably settled in his room, the Chapmans were in the process of departing the hospital when they unexpectedly encountered Joseph, who had hurried over in a flurry of concern.
"Joseph..." Upon sighting the young man, Chapman swiftly advanced to greet him, his mind filled with thoughts of Joseph's promising future.
"Grandpa Chapman, it's good to see you. Lucas has updated me on my father's condition. I assure you, we will secure the best medical team for him," Joseph declared, his voice resonating with the deference a junior family member typically shows to an elder. This was a stark contrast to his demeanor at the last family gathering he had attended with Luna.
"I appreciate it," Chapman responded, casting a significant look at Cassie, his eyes noting Joseph's apparent concern for his granddaughter. It was evident that they would need to treat Cassie well in the future. With Leo Chapman incapacitated, the Chapman stronghold was in a precarious position, and a great deal now hinged on their sons-in-law.
After a brief pause, Chapman addressed Cassie, "Don’t let sorrow consume you, child. You have your entire life ahead of you. You are always welcome at Chapman Manor, and should you ever wish to join Chapman Enterprises, do not hesitate to inform us."
Cassie was initially taken aback, but quickly understood the Chapmans' ambitious nature.
"Grandpa, how can you agree to her joining Chapman?" Luna protested, unable to conceal her disapproval.
"Enough, Luna. She is your sister, and she can provide you with support in the future," Chapman firmly stated before departing with his wife.
Frustrated, Luna stomped her foot and turned to glare at Cassie, but instead found herself looking into Joseph's strikingly handsome face, causing her heart to flutter, "Joseph..."
Joseph didn’t even spare her a glance, choosing instead to wrap his arms around Cassie, softly consoling her, "Don’t worry, I'm here for you now."
Luna could only watch the tender scene unfolding before her, jealousy gnawing at her. Joseph had never shown her such gentleness. While Felix had always treated her kindly, he lacked Joseph's wisdom and his captivating presence.
Biting her lip in resentment, she snapped, "Don't get too smug, Cassie. Grandpa only welcomed you into the Chapman family out of respect for Joseph. Without that, you wouldn't have stood a chance."
Cassie was left speechless. "Really, Luna? Dad's lying in a coma, and all you can think about is your jealousy?"
"Mind your own business," Luna retorted with a cold laugh. "Let me tell you, there's someone who will always have a place in Joseph's heart, someone you could never..."
"Luna," Joseph cut her off sternly, his eyes icy and foreboding in a way she'd never seen before. "If you say one more thoughtless word, you'll regret ever speaking."
"Joseph, she's just upset," Vera interjected quickly, sensing Joseph's anger, and swiftly led Luna out of the room.
"Joseph, you can silence me, but it's common knowledge among New York's elite. Cassie will find out sooner or later..." Luna's bitter voice echoed down the hallway, gradually fading away.
The hospital room descended into silence, punctuated only by the rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor.
Joseph glanced anxiously at the woman beside him, only to find Cassie calmly moistening a cloth in warm water to wipe Leo Chapman's face, seemingly unaffected by Luna's spiteful words.
"Babe, don't listen to Luna..."
