Chapter 356

Walter, not content, said, "To be honest, Hernandez Corp was doing well under your mother eight years ago. But it was after you took over, made trips abroad, brought in top talent, and established the labs yourself, expanding the tech sector—it was you who cemented Hernandez's position as the nation's leading family and pushed the company into the global top ten. And now, Liam gets to reap the benefits?"

"What has Liam done? While you were busy working from two in the morning until four, barely sleeping, he was abroad living it up. And he waltzes back into a high-ranking position."

"Do I look like someone who works that hard to make things easier for others?" Joseph said, raising an eyebrow unexpectedly.

Walter was taken aback.

"How's the investigation into last night's incident going?" Joseph asked, changing the subject.
"Your drink was spiked with something that amps you up," Walter revealed, "and then someone told Luna that Miss Brooks was hauled off into the room you were in by Edward."

Joseph nodded in understanding. Last night, Luna, Cassie, Edward, and he were just pawns in Liam's game.

He glanced upstairs towards the bedroom, then turned to Rosalind. "Would you mind checking on her?"

Before long, Rosalind returned from upstairs, her face etched with concern. "Miss Brooks is lying in bed motionless, refusing to eat or drink. She is in very bad shape."

It was as if the life had drained out of her and the will to survive had extinguished.

Rosalind stopped short, unable to voice her next thought.

"Thinking about going on a hunger strike?" There was an undertone of agitation in Joseph's voice.

He stood up and made his way upstairs.

Just as Rosalind described, Cassie lay there with closed eyes, her face ghostly pale.

But Joseph knew she was awake.

"Is this your way of manipulating me?" Joseph scoffed coldly. "Cassie, since when did you become so weak?"

Cassie's eyelashes fluttered. That's right; there was a time when she believed her biological parents were the Roberts, who had tried to kill her, frame her, and even tortured her in prison until she was on the brink of death. Discovering later that her grandmother was murdered plunged her into despair. But back then, beyond the hatred, she had Joseph by her side, giving her warmth and hope.

Now he stood like a daunting peak she couldn't seem to scale, hope nowhere in sight.

"Get up," Joseph commanded, pulling the covers away and lifting her from the bed. "Don't you want to find out who killed your mother?"

"I don't want to anymore." Cassie's low reply betrayed her resignation. With him around, revenge seemed an impossibility.

Joseph was taken aback, his anger flaring. "If you don't pull yourself together, I swear I'll take the Peace Group down. I will strip David of everything, and from today onwards, I'll relentlessly crush Leo Chapman and Laura Miller. Anyone connected to you, I won't let them be."

"Joseph, just kill me," Cassie said, her patience snapping as she opened her eyes and started hitting him with a pillow, sobbing.

Seeing her in this state, Joseph actually felt a wave of relief. He embraced her tightly. "Cassie, I'm not going to kill you. I want you by my side for life. I will marry you and take care of you. Don't leave me."

His earnest gaze caused a momentary lapse in Cassie's defiance, but she quickly scoffed. "Do you think I can trust you? Look at my face. Is this how you 'take care of me'?"

"Yesterday was an accident," Joseph explained, somewhat awkwardly.
"Do you actually expect me to believe you?" Cassie's voice dripped with disdainful sarcasm.

"It's true. Someone messed with my drink last night and spiked it to get the party going. I thought I just overdid it," Joseph said, his smile tinged with self-mockery.

Cassie paused, replaying the previous night's events in her mind. He did seem off, not exactly his usual self.

But when it came down to it, all of this was someone else's scheme, and she was just the unwitting victim caught in the crossfire.

"Come on, get cleaned up and have something to eat. I'll get your toothpaste ready." Joseph, seeing her silent, affectionately tousled her hair and went off to the bathroom to squeeze out some toothpaste and brought her warm water to rinse her mouth.
