Chapter 1414 Megan Hides Inside

"You try to talk her out of drinking more. I'll be there soon."

Right after he said that, the nanny's voice cut in, "Miss Ray, don't move around; get up quickly. Michael, I can't talk now, she fell down drunk."

The call ended.

Michael felt a wave of anxiety.

But the movie still had an hour left.

He checked the time and rushed downstairs.

At the cinema, Laura's phone buzzed.

She glanced at it and saw a message from Michael on Facebook: [Laura, there's an urgent issue at one of my companies. I have to go and can't finish the movie with you. I've already arranged for the driver to pick you up. Contact him after the movie.]

Laura stared at the message in silence for a while.

Michael had left her halfway through the movie.

What kind of urgent company issue could make Michael so anxious?

She opened her phone's locator.

She saw Michael's location moving quickly.

Michael was definitely in a hurry.

But half an hour later, she noticed Michael wasn't heading to the company but to a new development area from a few years ago.

After the movie ended, she got into the driver's car and saw that Michael's location had stopped moving.

She looked it up on her phone and found that the place seemed to be a high-end apartment complex.

When Michael arrived at the apartment, Megan was already lying on the bed, her face flushed from drinking. The nanny, worried about being blamed, quickly explained, "I just managed to get her to bed. She kept insisting on drinking more."

"Why did she suddenly want to drink?" Michael asked, confused.

The nanny thought for a moment, "She's been staying home every day and hasn't been very happy. This afternoon, she played with her phone for a bit, then went back to her room. I accidentally saw her crying."

Phone?

Michael suddenly frowned. Could it be that she saw the trending news about him and Laura getting married?

Michael felt helpless. He rubbed his temples and said, "You can go now."

After the nanny left, he walked to the bedside.

Megan looked at him with a flushed face, her eyes hazy, "Give me more alcohol, let me get drunk. Living is too exhausting."

"Megan, don't be like this." Michael really didn't know how to comfort her.

"Michael, is that you?" Megan tilted her head, "Am I dreaming? How could you be here? You must be with your wife and daughter."

As Megan spoke, tears streamed down her face, "I'm really envious of Laura and Cassie. What do I lack compared to them? I just want a simple, happy life. When I was young, my mom died early, and my dad quickly remarried. I knew my stepmom liked Nina more, so I tried to be obedient and careful. Even though I knew my brother was a screw-up and did a lot of messed-up things, I had no choice. He was my only brother; I had no one else."

"I just want a man who loves me and a home. Why is it so hard?"

"I hate myself for being like this."

She slapped herself hard.

Michael's throat tightened.

"Megan, don't do this." He quickly grabbed her hand, "I'll protect you."

"I'm so tired. Sometimes I think it would be better to be dead." Megan threw herself into his arms, sobbing uncontrollably. Michael couldn't push her away.

Honestly, it was the first time he had seen Megan like this.

Maybe this was her true self.

Late at night.

When Laura heard the door open downstairs, she glanced at her phone numbly; it was already 2 AM.

He had stayed in that apartment until 2 AM.

She closed her eyes, pretending to be asleep.

Twenty minutes later, Michael gently lay down beside her.

Laura noticed that Michael seemed to have insomnia, tossing and turning lightly.

Laura's mind was racing with thoughts.

This night felt longer than ever.

Until dawn, Laura pretended to wake up.

Michael also sat up, his eyes red, "Honey, I'm sorry. I had an urgent matter yesterday. How was the movie?"

"Did you handle everything?" Laura asked calmly, "What happened at the company?"

"It was a small company I invested in; there was a fire." Michael had his excuse ready.

"Really, where?"

"Up north." He quickly yawned, afraid she would ask more, "I'm going to sleep a bit more."

He didn't know that when he turned over, Laura was watching his back with disappointment and complexity.

She thought she had become numb, but when Michael lied again, she still found it incredibly ridiculous.

Michael could even make up a fire as an excuse.

She wanted to drag him out of bed, expose his lies, make him feel ashamed and embarrassed, and then break up.

But she couldn't do that.

They still had a child together.

Laura couldn't alert Megan prematurely, in case she escaped again.

While changing clothes, Laura looked at herself in the mirror and remembered how impulsive she used to be, doing everything with passion.

Because her parents and older brother had always spoiled her.

After leaving her family and entering society, Laura had been hurt repeatedly.

Laura couldn't understand what was wrong with her.

Maybe someone like her shouldn't take emotions too seriously.

While Michael was still sleeping, Laura drove out.

On the way, Laura called Cassie, "Come with me somewhere. I'll pick you up in half an hour."

When the car arrived at the Hernandez House, Cassie quickly got in and saw Laura's bloodshot eyes, "You didn't sleep last night? The place you want me to go with you, is it about Michael?"

"He stayed at that place until 2 AM last night. I checked; it's an apartment complex." Laura handed her the phone, "He told me it was a company he invested in that caught fire. He left me at the cinema and went there. I'm not sure if Megan is hiding there, but we can go check."

"Alright, let's go check first. If it's not, we won't alert them," Cassie said, looking at her worriedly, "Let me drive. You should rest."

"I can't sleep even if I rest; I'll just overthink," Laura started the car.

Seeing Laura like this, Cassie didn't say anything more.

In the morning, it took about an hour to get there.
