Chapter 1768 He Knows Her True Identity
Laura felt a chill run down her spine; the crew Derek brought this time was seriously impressive.
"This is my friend Bernice," Laura said, wrapping an arm around Bernice.
"Ms. Ramsey, nice to meet you," Milan said, extending his hand.
Bernice shook it, their eyes meeting with a calm, steady gaze.
Lucas watched the scene unfold with a cold detachment. Everyone here was an adult, and he knew exactly what Derek and Laura were up to.
But was Milan really interested in Bernice?
"I need a break, Mr. Runyon. How about you take over for me and play a bit? I'll chat with Derek," Laura handed the racket to Milan. "How's your game, Mr. Runyon?"
"Not bad."
Milan moved to the other side, and Bernice served the ball.
They went back and forth, each rally lasting dozens of rounds.
Bernice threw in some tricky shots, but Milan always managed to return them. They quickly found a rhythm.
Laura watched from the sidelines, feeling a bit emotional. "Your friend is really good at this."
"I'm not bad either. Let's give it a shot later," Derek said, putting an arm around her shoulder and whispering in her ear, "So you don't keep staring at him."
"Are you jealous?" Laura giggled, "Milan is really handsome and seems decent. Does he have a girlfriend? He's not a player, is he?"
"He has no bad habits," Derek replied.
Laura was pleased. She glanced at Lucas and said, "That's good. Actually, it doesn't matter if they date or not; being friends is fine too. Unlike some people who think they're so great just because they have a bit of money and power and don't know how to respect others."
Lucas spoke calmly, "Laura, be reasonable. When you first came to Whisperlyn City, I never disrespected you."
"Because we had no conflicts of interest," Laura said firmly, "You didn't fancy me. If you did, you'd think someone from a small place like me is just for fun, but you'd never think I'm good enough for you."
"You misunderstand me a lot," Lucas's expression remained unchanged.
"It's not a misunderstanding," Laura raised her chin, "I also know that if it weren't for the Miller Group's business growing bigger and my relationship with Derek, Mr. Nelson, you wouldn't be talking to me as an equal here."
"You think too much of me."
Lucas's lips curled into a smile that could make any woman blush.
This man, if you didn't know his true nature, you would think he was a gentleman.
"Mr. Nelson, I'm tired. You go play," Cassie suddenly walked over.
Lucas took the racket.
Joseph immediately followed, holding Cassie, "I'll take a break too. Who's up next?"
"I'll go," Derek quickly took over from Joseph, not daring to let Laura play.
As Derek and Lucas walked to the court, Derek smiled gently, "Laura is a bit impulsive; don't mind her."
"I won't," Lucas replied.
"But," Derek suddenly smiled meaningfully, "Mr. Nelson, sometimes when you think someone is bad, it might not be their problem but because you look down on them from the bottom of your heart."
Lucas's deep eyes flickered slightly.
"I understand," Derek said, "People like us are surrounded by flattery and sycophants from birth, but I've always believed that all men are created equal.""Really? I don't think so," Lucas said, his tone lazy and indifferent.
"Mr. Nelson, being too arrogant isn't a good look," Derek said, trying to be helpful.
Lucas chuckled, clearly not buying it.
After an exhilarating badminton match, Bernice headed to the restroom to wash her face.
Milan came out of the men's room, washing his hands.
Both had their heads down. He chuckled softly, "It's been a while since we played like this. Your skills have definitely improved."
Bernice didn't look up, "Did you come here on purpose?"
"By chance. Derek mentioned his wife had a good single friend to introduce to me. I guessed it was you," Milan said softly, "This is good. Now we can meet openly."
Bernice looked up at him, "It's not good for you to be too close to me. I live in the spotlight, and you have a bright future. Being too close to the entertainment industry will affect your career."
"Nina," Milan sighed softly, "I just don't want to see you get hurt while I can only watch from the shadows."
The name Nina made Bernice shiver slightly. It had been so long since anyone called her that. And in this world, only Milan knew her true identity.
"You've already helped me a lot," Bernice lowered her eyes, "If it weren't for you, I wouldn't have found such excellent subordinates, and I couldn't have accomplished many things."
"You said you wanted to take revenge personally, and I respect that," Milan said, his voice filled with concern, "What are your plans for the future? Will you stay at Dreamscape Entertainment Group? Nina, I don't want you to keep getting entangled with Lucas. He will only hurt you."
"Milan, although we've known each other since childhood, you know Bernice better than Nina."
She looked at him deeply, "Don't get too close to me. I can only live in the shadows, while you are like a shining star. You should go further and higher."
With that, she turned and left.
Milan watched her walk away.
Until Lucas walked over from the other side, washing his hands, he said to Milan in a low voice, "Mr. Runyon, some women are best left alone. Women in the entertainment industry are far more complicated than you think."
"As expected of Mr. Nelson, you already know my identity," a trace of hatred flashed in Milan's eyes. If it weren't for Lucas, how could Nina have ended up like this?
"Rumor has it that the Presidential Palace has a special secret guard unit. Although there are only a hundred people, they are all selected through the most brutal wars and competitions. To be so close to Derek, you must be the leader of the secret guard unit."
Lucas stood up straight, meeting his gaze, "You can have any woman you want. Why Bernice?"
With that, Lucas left without looking back.
Milan clenched his fists tightly, thinking to himself, 'Lucas, a cold-hearted man like you will never understand how good she is. But you will regret it sooner or later. You will never know what you missed.'
After the game, Bernice was driving back when she received a call from Lucas. His tone was commanding, "Park at the corner ahead. I have something to say to you."
