Chapter 164
""What's the use of a doctor? They can't take away my pain,"" Joseph murmured weakly, his voice frail, his lashes intertwined as he closed his eyes again. His effort to endure the pain, combined with his pale, handsome face, compelled Cassie to tighten her grip on his hand subconsciously. ""Is there... anything I can do to help?""
""You want to help me?"" His eyes flickered open.
She nodded earnestly.
He furrowed his brow, as if pondering seriously, and then offhandedly suggested, ""Maybe you could try kissing me, to distract my mind.""
Cassie's eyes widened in disbelief. Was he for real? If he hadn't looked so vulnerable, she might have thought he was teasing her.
""If you don’t want to, forget it,"" Joseph turned away, continuing to feign pained groans.
""No, no, I want to."" To her, he was her lifesaver in that moment.
Mustering courage, Cassie leaned in and pressed her lips against his. She could taste the faint bitterness of medicine on his lips, which seemed to dissipate as the kiss deepened
It was her first time initiating a kiss with him, her face flushing hot in the dim light.
Joseph tensed, and Cassie felt his rapid heartbeat. But before he could respond, she pulled away, her voice a mere whisper, ""Is this okay?""
""It helps a bit, but the pain comes back when you leave,"" Joseph said weakly.
""I'm afraid a longer kiss might hurt you more,"" Cassie replied timidly.
""Come here,"" he gestured with his chin to the empty spot beside him.
After a moment's hesitation, Cassie lay beside him and kissed him again. At first, it was her tentative kiss, but gradually, he took over, and she found herself lost in the kiss, her arms wrapped around his waist.
She didn’t know how long they kissed for until the rush of her quickened pulse eventually led her into exhaustion, and she slowly fell asleep against him.
Joseph pulled away to look at her in the dim light, planting a gentle kiss on her forehead before closing his eyes to sleep.
Somehow, the commotion seemed to have dulled the pain.
The next morning, Cassie woke up first, finding Joseph still in a deep slumber beside her. Staring at the handsome face on the adjacent pillow, she suddenly remembered everything that transpired in the dead of night and felt her cheeks burn with embarrassment. Yet, she didn't seem to mind it...
Startled by her own thoughts, she was interrupted by a knock at the door. ""Time for rounds,"" announced a voice from outside. Cassie quickly threw on her coat and hurried to the door, greeted by the same doctor as last night, now accompanied by a group of interns. Their gazes lingered on her, tinged with curiosity, making Cassie's face turn even hotter, thinking they all knew about the doctor's misunderstanding from the evening before.
Thankfully, Joseph stirred awake, and the doctor promptly turned to check on him. After a round of examinations that lasted about ten minutes, the doctor, ready to leave, cleared his throat and offered a gentle reminder, ""Although you've recovered quite well from the first night, please stay vigilant.""
Cassie was left speechless.
It wasn't until she went to wash her face and saw her swollen lips in the mirror that she realized why everyone had been looking at her so oddly."
