Chapter 1235 Confrontation
Michael snorted, "If she doesn't take it the right way, Lucas will probably make her take it, no questions asked."
Cassie and Laura shared a look.
Joseph wrapped his arm around Cassie's waist. "When it comes to being ruthless, Lucas has me beat."
Despite Joseph's usual stern vibe and Lucas's nerdy look in his white coat, no one could match Lucas's natural ruthlessness.
In the distance, Lucas glanced their way and waved but didn't come over.
Michael laughed. "Lucas is probably too shy to come over. Wait a sec! Isn't that David? What's he doing with Ralph?"
Ralph had just gotten a promotion and was now a department head. As soon as he showed up, people swarmed to kiss up to him.
David followed Ralph, looking different from before. Nowadays, David seemed to be Ralph's favorite, with Ralph constantly introducing him to tonight's big shots.
Despite David's bad rep, no one brought up the past. They shook hands with David, chatting and laughing.
Cassie felt super annoyed. She had worked hard to ruin David's reputation, only to see him use Ralph to get back into the high society of Whisperlyn City.
David seemed to notice her too. He raised an eyebrow and looked her way.
Moments later, he said something quietly to the others and walked straight towards Cassie.
"Honey, come here." David beckoned to her with a deeply affectionate look. "You are my wife, but you always hang out with other men and stay at his house. You may not care about your reputation, but I do. Come home with me later."
Cassie was deeply irritated by him. "I remember the divorce papers were sent to you a long time ago. The court should have received our divorce case as well. I sincerely hope you sign them soon."
"As long as I haven't signed, you are my wife." David adjusted his scholarly glasses. "On regular days, it's one thing, but at such an important event, everyone has brought their wives or official girlfriends. Cassie, you'd rather attend as a mistress. How shameless can you be?"
A flash of disgust crossed Cassie's eyes.
Joseph tightened his grip on her hand, his handsome face darkening. "She is the mother of my children and the woman I love most. But you, you have indeed lowered the standard of this event tonight."
He paused, then turned to Michael. "Michael, how did the Jude family even invite such a lowly person tonight?"
"I don't know. He must shamelessly tag along with Ralph." Michael cooperated fully, even deliberately running up to Ralph and loudly saying, "Ralph, why did you bring someone like David in here? You're really underestimating our Jude family banquet. It's not that I look down on him, but that guy pretended his kidney was damaged to save a girl after being stabbed, but he was perfectly healthy. And that's not all; he always talks about loving his wife, but he cheated on his wife, even having sex with her secretary in the office. When caught, he resorts to domestic violence."
Ralph's face turned beet red, feeling the heat since David was his guest.
Seeing the disdainful looks from everyone around, he quickly said, "This must be a misunderstanding."
But Michael wasn't having it, raising his voice even more. "Ralph, don't get me wrong. I'm not blaming you. I mean, the guy looks so polished, like a business elite. What innocent woman wouldn't fall for him? But domestic violence and infidelity? That's crossing the line."
"Ralph, I see Mr. Jude over there. I'll go say hello." A politician quickly pulled his daughter away, using it as an excuse.
Soon, other politicians and elites found their own reasons to leave.
Even though David was doing well now, no one wanted their daughters falling for a guy with such a bad rep.
Ralph was utterly humiliated and furious. "Michael, you really know how to give me face."
"Ralph, don't say that. If I don't give you face, who should I give it to?" Michael was thick-skinned, and he waved to Marigold behind him. "Marigold, long time no see. You're getting prettier, but stay away from David, don't get deceived."
"I'm not that stupid," Marigold blurted out.
She initially meant to mock Cassie, but then she remembered the Dixon family brought David.
"Right, you're not that stupid. Then I'm relieved." Michael laughed.
Ralph's recently triumphant face turned red with anger. He glared at Michael and turned to leave.
David was fuming. He had planned to use Ralph's status to network with the elite, but Michael had ruined everything.
His fists clenched, and he suddenly walked over with a fake smile. "Michael, as a member of the Jude family, your behavior is quite disgraceful."
"Do you want to anger me? Dream on." Michael sneered. "You are quite disgraceful."
David's face twisted briefly, and then he suddenly smiled at Cassie.
"Cassie, you are my wife. That's a fact." He pulled out a marriage certificate from his pocket. "Do you want to be with Joseph openly? I don't think it'll ever happen. And I wonder how long Joseph can protect you. One day, you'll be begging to crawl into my bed."
With that, he turned and followed Ralph.
Joseph watched his back, his eyes cold enough to tear him apart.
He had to admit, that marriage certificate deeply hurt him.
He hadn't cherished her before, but now that he knew Cassie belonged to someone else, he felt incredibly agitated.
"Is he crazy? Who carries a marriage certificate around? He's just trying to provoke you," Michael said sympathetically.
"It's just a document. It doesn't control my heart." Cassie held Joseph's hand, remaining quite calm.
