Chapter 510
A laugh escaped Laura's lips, its sound more grotesque than any sob she could have produced. She was incredulous at the thought that she had once been smitten with that man. How blind she had been in those days.
Elliott gently patted Laura's shoulder, a gesture of sympathy. "It's wrong to strike another person," he said, "but as her former lover, shouldn't you understand her better? Perhaps you never took the time to truly know her. To you, Laura may not even hold as much importance as the woman you currently hold in your arms. Or maybe, in your eyes, Laura is nothing more than a morally bankrupt woman."
Benjamin stood frozen, taken aback by Elliott's words. "Elliott, we're discussing her act of violence, not dredging up the past. We ended our relationship a long time ago."
"You're correct," Elliott retorted, his icy gaze revealing a spark of animosity. "I'm... infuriated because Laura was hurt because of you." He paused, his voice hardening. "Isla got what she deserved. If you wish to involve the police, be my guest. Let's see if you can touch anyone from the Miller family." With that, he guided Laura downstairs, not once looking back.
"Elliott, you're spoiling her," Benjamin protested, feeling cornered and humiliated.
"Yes, I am spoiling her," Elliott shot back, "because Laura is my sister. Isn't it my duty to show leniency towards someone I love?" With a derisive snort, he departed with Laura, not once turning his head.
Throughout the entire confrontation, Laura remained safely ensconced in Elliott's embrace, never once glancing back.
Meanwhile, Benjamin was left with a sudden constriction in his chest. He remembered Laura's words - her regret at ever knowing him. Were those words spoken in the heat of the moment? Or had Laura truly exited his life?
"Oh... it hurts..." Isla's sudden groan of pain interrupted his thoughts. She clutched her face, wincing. "Benjamin, it hurts."
"I'll take you to the hospital," Benjamin offered, taking her hand and leading her towards the stairs.
"I can't walk, my leg seems to be injured," Isla forced a smile through the pain.
With no other option, Benjamin scooped her up in his arms and began to descend the stairs. "Isla," he asked, a newfound calm settling over him, "do you know why Laura lost control and struck you?" As he pondered, he realized that despite Laura's arrogance, she was not one to resort to violence. They had been separated for six months; if Laura had wanted to pick a fight with Isla, she would have done so much earlier.
"How would I know? I haven't seen her since that incident at the hospital," Isla responded, her lips forming a frustrated pout.
Benjamin fell silent.
From that day forward, every time Benjamin reflected on the events of that day, he was left with nothing but regret and a profound sense of longing for Laura. But there was no turning back.
