"No problem at all. Your fiancée has a figure that could rival any supermodel. Her hair is as lavish as a waterfall. She's a vision of beauty, a perfect match for you, Joseph." The manager lavished praise, leaving Cassie speechless. The charm of a sales professional wasn't to be underestimated - they'd compliment anything, even hair.
Soon, a collection of exquisite jewelry was spread out before them, dazzling Cassie. "Pick anything you like. Take it all if you wish," Joseph boasted, sounding like a man to whom money was no object.
She was silent.
Eventually, Cassie chose a star-studded diamond ring, but Joseph thought it too dainty and opted instead for a pink, petal-shaped diamond ring. As she slipped it on her delicate, pale finger, the ring brought out a youthful vibrancy in her.
The manager grinned. "Joseph, you've got great taste! That ring weighs a handsome 13.14 grams."
Cassie instinctively resisted, "It's too heavy."
"Keep it on. Don't take it off," Joseph commanded.
Left without words, Cassie begrudgingly accepted the ring. She did have a weakness for pink, and had this been back in Madison, she would've been overjoyed.
"And find a men's ring for myself," Joseph reminded.
Given his preference for bold pieces, Cassie purposefully selected a diamond-studded men's ring that looked rather gaudy. But once on Joseph's finger, it transformed, reflecting an air of elegance, as if ready for a cover shoot.
She was spellbound, and Joseph, noticing her puzzled expression, approved with a satisfying stroke of her hair. "Good choice."
Cassie wanted to protest, but before she could, they stepped out of the store and were met with the flashes of paparazzi cameras.
She wanted to warn him, but Joseph wrapped his arm around her waist. "Does it bother you?"
"I'm already strong enough from all the torment you put me through," Cassie retorted sarcastically. "But what about you? The public thinks Luna is your girlfriend."
"I suppose I've never publicly acknowledged Luna as my girlfriend," remarked Joseph, his handsome features betraying a cool detachment.
She was staggered by his arrogance. Their families had come together for meals over the couple's affair, and they'd even attended various parties arm in arm, and yet here he was, denying her the status of girlfriend.
Suddenly, she felt a pang of sympathy for Luna.
If there ever was a definition of a jerk, Joseph epitomized it.
Word of Joseph taking Cassie to buy a diamond ring spread like wildfire across Madison.
The next day, the once discreet and enigmatic Joseph was hot gossip again.
