Chapter 1463 The Biggest Mistake Was Marrying You
"Hand over the knife," Bernice said, stepping out of the shadows. "I've done everything else. Let me finish this with Megan."
"Bernice, you can't do this. You'll end up in prison, and that's it for you," Laura pleaded, trying to stop her. "Yeah, Megan's the worst, and I want her gone too, but let the law handle it. She's not worth throwing your life away."
"I wish the law could handle it, but there's no evidence. If there was, I wouldn't be here," Bernice said, her eyes steely with resolve. No one really got how much she was hurting.
"We can find the evidence, bit by bit," Laura shouted. "You're my best friend. I can't just watch you destroy your life over her. You need to go now."
"Go?" Bernice laughed bitterly.
Where could she go?
She had nowhere to go. Once Michael started digging, he'd trace everything back to her.
If that was the case, she might as well take Megan out first.
"Even if I leave, I have to kill her first." Bernice tried to push Lucas's hand away, but his grip was like iron.
Fed up, Bernice shoved Lucas hard. "Lucas, let go. This is my problem."
If it weren't for this guy, she wouldn't be in this mess, and her parents would still be alive.
Lucas didn't argue. He just knocked Bernice out with a swift move.
As she crumpled to the ground, Lucas caught her.
Laura was stunned. "What are you doing?"
"If I didn't knock her out, would she leave?" Lucas said, fishing a car key from Bernice's pocket and tossing it to Laura. "Remember what I told you: to keep Michael off Bernice's trail, the car outside is yours, and you hired the guy who kidnapped Megan. When Michael shows up, play it cool and don't let him suspect anything."
Laura was terrified of taking the fall alone, but seeing Bernice's pale face, she clenched the car key tightly. "Got it. Take her away."
Lucas picked up Bernice and gave Laura a serious look before leaving. "Hang in there. I've already called Cassie and Joseph. They're on their way."
With that, he left with Bernice.
Laura stood there for a moment, feeling the eerie stillness around her.
She nervously checked Megan's breathing. Megan was still alive, thank God.
Laura was scared out of her mind. Lucas said Michael would let her go, but she wasn't so sure. Megan meant everything to Michael. When he saw Megan like this, who knew if he'd lose it and kill Laura.
But Laura didn't regret it. If Bernice stayed, she was dead for sure. At least Laura had a 50/50 shot.
But that unknown 50% made Laura think of Maeve, and she got even more anxious.
Just then, Laura's phone rang. Seeing Derek's name, she felt a glimmer of hope.
Laura quickly answered, her voice shaking. "Derek."
"Laura, where are you? Send me your location," Derek's voice crackled with worry.
Laura almost broke down. "I'm in some factory."
Before she could say more, a gunshot echoed from outside.
Startled, she dropped her phone.
Before she could grab it, a group of people burst in, led by Michael. He was still in the dark blue pajamas Laura had bought him on their last shopping trip.
Now he was wearing those pajamas, rushing to save another woman.
The dim candlelight cast eerie shadows on the walls.
Michael immediately spotted Laura, her big, clear eyes locked onto him.
His mind was a whirlwind.
Then he saw Megan, battered and broken at Laura's feet, and his eyes blazed with fury.
"Megan!" Michael rushed over, cradling her gently despite her injuries.
Laura thought Megan looked filthy and disgusting. She wanted to wash her hands after touching her, but Michael held Megan like she was the most precious thing in the world.
"Megan, what happened? Wake up," Michael called out, but Megan didn't respond. He checked her limbs and then glared at Laura with bloodshot eyes. "You cut her tendons?"
Laura's legs shook under his gaze.
She had never seen Michael this angry. No matter how much they fought before, he had never looked at her like this. She even sensed a murderous intent.
Despite her fear, Laura felt a twinge of sarcasm.
Lucas had told her not to let Michael suspect anything, but Michael didn't even question it. He just assumed she did it.
It showed how little he knew her.
But that was fine; it would save a lot of trouble.
"She brought this on herself," Laura said defiantly.
Before Laura could finish, Michael kicked her hard in the chest. She slammed into the wall and crumpled to the ground in pain.
Laura was actually pretty tough. She had learned some combat skills with Cassie abroad, but she never thought Michael, who had once shared a bed with her, would actually hit her.
"Laura, you've disappointed me so much. I never thought you could be so cruel." Michael looked down at her like she was an enemy. "If you have any issues, take them out on me. Why hurt Megan? You've ruined her life."
Laura couldn't take it anymore. With a weak, mocking tone, she shot back, "She got what she deserved."
"Shut up." Michael, like a mad beast, stepped on her chest. "The real monster here is you. I was blind to ever love someone like you. You can't hold a candle to Megan. Marrying you was the biggest mistake of my life."
Laura's chest hurt so much she could barely speak.
She just glared at Michael with red eyes. "Funny, that was my biggest mistake too."
Michael, worried about Megan, didn't have the energy to keep fighting with Laura.
