Chapter 488
Cassie responded with a nod and a gentle smile. "Yes, I know. Perhaps 'Summer' wasn't your brainchild either. Maybe it was Lucas's idea. And as for calling out Megan Ray in your dreams... it wasn’t intentional. It must've been some otherworldly trick orchestrated by Megan herself."
Joseph sat in stillness, the unfamiliar taste of silence heavy on his lips. As an attorney, he had never envisioned feeling so utterly defenseless.
The car pulled up to the hospital, and Cassie spoke without a moment's hesitation. "You guys go on ahead. I've got a meeting at the firm." Joseph, battling the urge to request her company, barely managed to press his lips together before silently stepping out of the vehicle.
Cassie ignited the engine and drove off, unbothered by Joseph's attempt to elicit sympathy. After all, no one seemed to fuss over her when times got tough.
The hospital was bustling that morning. Before she could even reach the entrance, Cassie found herself stuck in traffic. Her gaze meandered out the window, and suddenly, she spotted Joyce Ray. Dressed in a blue floral number, her long hair swaying in the breeze, Joyce was clutching a bouquet of flowers.
So much for instructing Joyce Ray to leave; she'd practically sprinted to deliver flowers.
A cold glint flickered in Cassie's eyes.
A thought crossed her mind, and she dialed Walter’s number. "Which room are you in?"
"Rosalind, you're coming?" Walter's voice echoed with surprise.
"Yes."
"VIP Room 6 on the fifth floor."
---
Upstairs, after terminating the call, Walter noticed the intensity in Joseph's eyes.
"Is she coming?"
"Yeah," Walter responded with a smile. "It seems Rosalind talks tough, but her heart still cares about you."
A deep, captivating smile graced Joseph's lips, beguiling enough to distract the nurse preparing his injection.
"Hold off on that needle for a moment," Joseph abruptly withdrew his arm, "Wait until you hear a knock on the door, then administer the injection. Miss a bit, let it bleed more. The more shocking, the better."
The nurse was flabbergasted.
She could never have anticipated the elusive Madison Joseph resorting to such a juvenile tactic as deliberately exaggerating his pain; it completely upended her perception of him.
Five minutes later, a knock echoed at the door.
The nurse's hands quivered as she inserted the needle, and blood began to seep.
Joseph bit down on his pale lower lip, his handsome face a canvas of vulnerability, restraint, and exquisite pain.
The nurse's heart nearly melted at the sight. Joseph was a master of drama, awakening maternal instincts in the most unsuspecting hearts, inciting a longing to cradle and comfort him.
That's when Walter swung the door open, and Joyce Ray entered, her face blanching at the sight of the blood. "Joseph, you're bleeding so much."
Joseph’s carefully curated expression froze.
Joyce Ray rushed forward, shoving the nurse aside, her eyes reddening with fury. "Don't you know how to give an injection? You've hurt Joseph’s hand."
The nurse stuttered, "I..."
"Joseph, let me handle this," Joyce Ray swiftly grabbed a swab from a tray to staunch the bleeding. Joseph tried to retract his hand, but Joyce Ray held on tight. "Joseph, stop moving, it'll get worse. Does it hurt? Let me blow on it to make it feel better..."
That's when Cassie made her entrance.
She hadn't planned on getting angry, but as she stepped through the door, she saw the nurse standing off to the side while Joyce Ray clutched Joseph's hand, her lips nearly grazing the back of it.
Reflecting on how she had almost believed that there was nothing transpiring between Joseph and Joyce in the past few days, she felt a strong urge to slap herself.
