Chapter 415

Cassie probed further, her curiosity refusing to be silenced. "I'm intrigued, how does one manage to remain single for such an extended period?"

Joseph's eyebrow arched, his gaze playful as he responded, "Some of us can handle solitude. I was perfectly content on my own before you entered my life."

Intrigued, Cassie couldn't help but push further. "What about your past relationships? Don't mistake me for a fool; some things may remain unspoken, but I’m not oblivious."

A shade of color drained from Joseph’s face, and after a moment's hesitation, he began to speak, his voice laced with complexity, "I..."

However, Cassie decided against pursuing that line of questioning and quickly changed the subject. "A man who remains unmarried either can’t or has another occupying his heart. I suspect he harbors feelings for Vera."

Joseph's voice held a note of disbelief as he responded, "Impossible."

"You doubt me?" Cassie frowned, a hint of frustration creeping into her voice. "A woman's intuition is often accurate. I've read psychology books that suggest people with disabilities from a young age can develop in two ways—some become optimistic and cheerful, while others turn reclusive and dark."

"Regardless, these are merely your suspicions; we need concrete evidence. Whoever harmed your father must be terrified of him regaining consciousness. They might even attempt to finish what they started..."

"I concur. Our move now is to wait. We wait for them to make a mistake; that's how we'll uncover the culprit."

A silent understanding passed between Cassie and Joseph as their eyes met. He understood her immediately. She was his girl, no doubt about it. Initially, he had been concerned about her ability to navigate the convoluted realities of New York. But she was adapting much quicker than he had anticipated.

Dawn broke, heralding the arrival of a new day.

Walter arrived bearing the results of the investigation. "The truck driver involved in the collision with Chapman was not at fault. The accident occurred at an intersection during a turn. Chapman's sedan lost control and crashed into the truck. An autopsy revealed the presence of drugs in his system, a significant amount."

"Was the driver hallucinating because of the drugs?" Cassie asked, taken aback.

"It seems so. That was likely the primary cause of the accident. However, the coroner stated that the driver wasn't a habitual user. He might've ingested the drugs accidentally. Now that he's deceased, there's no way to ascertain who he was with or what he was given prior to the incident. There's no evidence, and Clark's investigation didn't yield any related findings either."

Cassie felt a pang of disappointment, but she had anticipated this outcome. If someone had the audacity to target Leo Chapman, they would've ensured they left no trace.

"We just need to remain patient and maintain a vigilant watch over the hospital. Sooner or later, the person responsible will reveal themselves," Joseph reassured her.

Cassie nodded, understanding that haste would not aid their cause. "By the way, the company has a press release scheduled for the day after tomorrow. Are you prepared for that?"

"What's there to prepare?" Joseph replied, a smile playing on his lips.

Cassie paused, "The facts and figures, why are you asking me? I don't know the first thing about tech companies. Everyone at Madison Corp is eagerly anticipating the press conference."

"Don't worry," Joseph said, his voice steady though his eyes betrayed his excitement. "All I need is a meal of your Rack of Lamb, and I'll handle everything seamlessly."

Cassie blushed. She must've really perfected that recipe if he missed it this much.

Walter couldn't help but laugh.

"What's so amusing? Get out," Joseph said, a frosty look directed at him.

"Why are you so harsh on him?" Cassie asked, a sympathetic expression on her face as Walter exited. It was a wonder anyone could tolerate Joseph's temper.

"He's not my wife. Should I be all sweet to him?" Joseph retorted, taking her hand. "Right now, I can only afford to be sweet to you."

Cassie's mind drifted for a moment, but she quickly snapped back to reality. She was already scarred, and deep within his heart, there was someone he couldn't forget. She couldn't expose all her feelings, or the future might inflict even deeper wounds.

"Am I pouring my heart out while you’re daydreaming?" Joseph suddenly pulled her into his embrace, a hint of defeat in his voice, and bit her lip as if to chastise, "Do you love me or not?"
