Chapter 142
"After the trial, Alexander sat on the floor, as lifeless as a corpse. The police didn't hesitate; they dragged him out without ceremony.
The Roberts snuck out through the back door, their departure as quick as it was shameful.
Laura Miller rushed over to Cassie and wrapped her in an exuberant hug. ""This is beyond satisfying, absolutely fantastic! And Joseph Hernandez, how do you do it? I thought at most you'd lock Alexander up for twenty years. But life without parole? You're nothing short of a legend, my hero!""
""Yeah, you're incredible.""
Cassie nodded in agreement. The case had wrapped up quicker and more satisfyingly than she'd anticipated.
Throughout the trial, Joseph Hernandez had outclassed Alexander. Despite the Brooks family escaping unscathed, Height Company's reputation was in tatters—no one would dare hire them for renovations ever again.
""Is that all—just incredible?"" Joseph Hernandez asked, his eyebrows arching proudly as he locked gazes with Cassie.
While he was no stranger to post-trial compliments, today, for some reason, he found himself particularly eager to hear her thoughts.
Cassie looked up at him, his dark eyes stirring a fierce beat in her heart, a flush of warmth creeping up her cheeks. She found him more than just skilled—he was breathtakingly handsome, oozing a magnetic masculine charm.
But under the watchful eyes of those around them, how could she possibly voice such thoughts?
It was then that David, ever the picture of grace and erudition, approached, Arthur Lewis in tow.
""Cassie, congratulations,"" David said, his eyes alight with gentle pride before turning to Joseph, ""Joseph Hernandez, I can't thank you enough for helping Cassie win this case today.""
The smile slowly faded from Joseph's lips.
Heh, his own woman being thanked by another man on his behalf—what was the meaning of this?
A chilling aura began to emanate from him. Both Laura and Cassie sensed something was amiss.
Arthur Lewis was blissfully unaware of the storm brewing inside Joseph—the fear that David might steal Cassie's affections. He rushed forward, gripping Joseph Hernandez's hand with desperation. ""Joseph, I owe you big time for today. On behalf of Cassie, thank you. Are you free? I'd like to treat you to dinner.""
A deep, throaty chuckle escaped from Joseph Hernandez. His laughter never reached his eyes, which grew colder by the second.
Cassie's scalp tingled at his dark amusement and she quickly stepped in, shoving Arthur Lewis's hand away. ""Arthur, get this straight—I'm done with you.""
""Cassie, I know you're still mad, and that's okay. I can wait for the day you forgive me,"" Arthur said, full of regret. ""Today's trial made me see how foolish I've been all along. Not to mention the stuff Alexander’s been saying behind your back...""
""Arthur, regret won’t rewind time. Not everyone's going to wait for you—you miss out, and that's on you. Cassie must be tired from all this. Just drop it and spare her the unhappy stories,"" David cut in, then turned to Cassie with a hopeful look, ""How about we celebrate tonight? We can invite Joseph, too. I've actually got some legal questions I've been wanting to ask him.""
Joseph Hernandez adjusted the knot on his tie, amused. What a scene these rivals were making in their attempts to win favor.
But Cassie knew him well, sensing the storm brewing inside him. Hastily, she waved her hands, ""No, no, that's really nice of you, but I already have plans with Joseph.""
